John Henry Powell, Sr.

MURFREESBORO – Mr. John Henry Powell, Sr., 46, died at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday, September 7, 2004.

Mr. Powell was an employee of Jernigan Oil Company of Ahoskie, NC.

Survivors include his wife, Tina F. Powell of Murfreesboro, three daughters; Michelle Powell of Ahoskie, Jennifer and Jessica Powell of Murfreesboro; two sons, Michael and John Powell, Jr., both of Murfreesboro; one sister, Eva Harvey of Roanoke and one brother Robert Powell of Hawaii.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service with the Rev. Todd Lewis officiating. The burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m.

Ralph Josselson

AHOSKIE – Ralph Josselson, 86, of the 300 Block of South Curtis Street died Monday, September 6, 2004 in his home.

He was a native of Augusta, GA and a retired handy man.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2004 at Elmwood/Hebrew Cemetery in Norfolk, VA, with Rabbi Israel Koberman officiating.

Surviving is one brother: Dr. Albert &uot;Bud&uot; Josselson of Newport Beach, CA.

Lossie Bell Harrison

AULANDER – Lossie Bell Harrison, 81, of Aulander died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at her residence.

Harrison was born on January 25, 1921 in Tarboro in Edgecombe County.

Survivors include five daughters; Wanda Holloman of Aulander, Paula Munn of Waldolf, MD, Alice Burton of Capital Heights, MD, Carolyn Jackson of Washington, DC and Elouise Hutnell of Temple Hills, MD; three sons, Melvin Cobb of Clinton, MD and Andrew Harrison and Edward P. Harrison both of Washington, DC; one sister Susie Burroughs of Philadelphia, PA; one niece Elizabeth Pitt; one son-in-law Tommie Holloman and two daughters-in-law, Amanda Cobb and Pauline Harrison.

Fourteen grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren also survive her.

Funeral services will be held at St. John Second Baptist Church, Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. with a burial to follow at Wilder-Cherry Family Cemetery in Aulander.

Rev. Daniel Smith will be officiating.

Pattie Lou Davis Barnes

CONWAY – Pattie Lou Davis Barnes, 104, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

She was born November 2, 1899 to the late Hillary and Elizabeth Davis. Pattie was one of 10 children with five sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Barnes was married to the late W.H. (Donnie) Barnes.

She is survived by loved ones who will honor her memory and continually give thanks for the influence that she had upon their lives. They are: daughter, Brownie B. Johnson and son-in-law, Jennings Johnson of Conway; granddaughters Linda Johnson Parker and husband, Donald Parker of Woodland; and JoAnne Johnson McGee and husband Rick McGee, also of Woodland; great-grandson Gregory Wilson Parker and wife Heidi Turner Parker of Winterville; great-granddaughter Lynn Parker Flanagan and husband Scott Flanagan of Eden; great-grandsons Justin Blake McGee of Charlotte and Richard Trent McGee of Greenville, and great-granddaughters Holli and Mallory Flanagan.

Family will always lie at the center of Pattie’s life. She enjoyed every possible moment with them, loving, caring for and generously giving. She moved softly upon the earth. She did justly, loved mercy and walked humbly with her Lord. &uot;To God Be The Glory For The Great Things He Hath Done.&uot;

The family will receive friends, Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway.

The Rev. Willie McLawhorn, James Hester and Heath Lloyd will conduct a graveside service Friday at 2 p.m. in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

James Thomas &uot;Buck&uot; Porter

BOYKINS, VA – Mr. James Thomas &uot;Buck&uot; Porter, 63, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 7, 2004.

Porter was born October 3, 1940 in Southampton County, Va., son of the late Amos Porter and Lillie Vick Porter.

His wife Frances Ferguson Porter, of the home; his daughter Anita Warrick of Conway and son L.T. Ferguson of Pendleton; three sisters, Mattie Fuller of Emporia, Va., Catherine Pope of Conway and Jackie Ferguson of Emporia, Va.; five grandchildren also survive him.

Porter was a machine operator with Narricot Industry.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Newsoms, Va., with Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating.

Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Massey Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of the arrangements.

Johnnie Malachi Ferguson

AHOSKIE – Johnnie Malachi Ferguson, 85, died Sunday, September 5, 2004 at Guardian Care Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 10, 2004 at Lebanon Grove Baptist Church in Gatesville, NC at 2 p.m. with Rev. L. Harrell and Rev. Michael Williams officiating.

Burial will follow at Lebanon Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Gatesville.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 9, 2004 at Stallings Funeral Chapel in Gatesville from 6-8 p.m. and the family will be at the home of his sister, Edith Hit on Flat Branch Road in Gatesville.

Parents Johnnie Thomas Ferguson and Josephine W. Ferguson predeceased him.

Survivors include two daughters Phyllis F. Baker of Gatesville, NC and Brenda Ferguson of Suffolk, VA; one son Johnnie R. Ferguson of Ahoskie, NC and three sisters, Edith Hite of Gatesville, NC, Joyce Covington of Gates, NC and Elizabeth Jones of Waterbury, CT.

Eleven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survive him.

Dorothy Prickett Evans

JACKSON – Dorothy Prickett Evans, 71, of Jackson died Sunday, September 5, 2004, at her home, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Louisville, Kentucky on November 13, 1932, the daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Carlton S. Prickett, who served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Burlington for 22 years and the late Lucille Parker Prickett of Burlington. Her infant daughter Dorothy &uot;Dee&uot; Elizabeth Evans who died at birth in 1967 also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Evans received her BA degree from Meredith College, Raleigh and recently celebrated her 50th class reunion. After graduation, she taught third grade in North Carolina and South Carolina Schools.

She married Dr. T. Edwin Evans, Jr. in 1956. Due to his commission to the U.S. Public Health Service, they spent 17 years living in various places across the United States including Kentucky, New York, California and Massachusetts, before moving back to North Carolina in 1978. These moves enabled them to participate actively in Southern Baptist Pioneer Missions.

She was an active member of Jackson Baptist Church where she was a member of the Sallie Parker Sunday School Class. In addition to teaching Sunday School, she sang in the church choir, served as Assistant Church Clerk, Assistant Treasurer and participated in WMU.

During her years in Jackson, she served as the office manager in the dental practice of her husband, who retired in 1998. She will always be remembered for her strong faith, positive attitude and warm hospitality.

An avid sports fan, she was especially fond of the Carolina Tarheels and the Major League Baseball teams San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Socks. She enjoyed her bridge club, delivering Meals on Wheels, and sharing in a cancer awareness program.

She especially enjoyed being with her family, who loved her dearly and will miss her greatly. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Dr. T. Edwin Evans, Jr. retired dentist of Jackson, two daughters, Mrs. Lucille &uot;Lu&uot; Phelps and her husband David of Morehead City and Mrs. Rebecca &uot;Becky&uot; Glass and her husband David of Yorktown, Va., two sons Thomas &uot;Tommy&uot; E. Evans, III of Jackson and Robert &uot;Bobby&uot; Evans and his wife Gwen of San Francisco, Ca.

Affectionately known as &uot;Mymy,&uot; she is also survived by five grandchildren: Sarah Beth Phelps and Rachel Anne Phelps of Morehead City; Parker Wilson Glass and Evan Magruder Glass of Yorktown, Va. and Jonathan Robert Evans of San Francisco, Ca.; one sister, Elizabeth Prickett and her husband Edgar of Greensboro; one brother, Carlton S. Prickett Jr. and his wife Susan of Wilmington and also many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, September 9, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Jackson Baptist Church, Jackson with Rev. Billy Howell officiating. Burial will follow at Jackson Cemetery.
