AHOSKIE – Four turnovers doomed Hertford County’s bid to break into the win column here last night.

The Bears, who started with a pair of losses in which they gave up more than 400 yards, limited Hunt to just over 200 yards, but fell 13-6.

What new HCHS football skipper Greg Watford had indicated to WDLZ-FM analyst Gattis Hodges during a pre-game interview he wanted to see, he got. That was improvement.

The Bears, who struggled offensively and defensively in their first two losses, showed signs of the team many projected them to be early on during Friday’s outing.

After giving up 47 points to Tarboro and 35 to Gates County, Hertford County limited Hunt to a pair of scores – one in each half and were deadlocked at six-all at the intermission.

Still, it was the late turnovers that killed the upset bid.

Driving late in the fourth quarter trailing by seven, the Bears moved near midfield before an interception ended the threat.

The defense forced a punt by the Warriors, but HCHS fumbled on the next play from scrimmage.

The HCHS defense again stiffened and forced a 40-yard field goal attempt which was missed, giving the Bears one last shot with 3:51 to play.

After taking over on the 20-yardline, Hertford County drove to the their own 36-yardline, but an interception by Rick Spell sealed the win for Hunt.

On the first drive of the night it looked as if the Bears could be in for another long night. The Warriors put together a seven-play, 70-yard drive capped by an eight-yard Jermaine Williams run to paydirt. The PAT failed, but Hunt led 6-0 with 8:16 to play in the first quarter.

The Bears answered nearly 12 minutes later when sophomore quarterback Danny Dembry scampered 48 yards to the endzone. The play was part of a three-play drive that covered 68 yards. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the score deadlocked at six-all heading into the half.

The Bears couldn’t get going on their first drive in the second half as the Warriors forced a punt.

Hunt answered with a 47-yard drive on 13 plays that took the remainder of the third quarter.

The score came on a Williams’ five-yard touchdown run that came on fourth-and-one. Brian Radford added the conversion kick to establish the 13-6 final.

The Bears, who have a five-game losing streak dating back to last season, take to the road for the first time next week when they travel to D.H. Conley in Greenville.
