Chowan plans White’s inauguration

MURFREESBORO – Martin Christopher White will be inaugurated as the 22nd President of Chowan College on September 9 at 11 a.m. in Turner Auditorium, McDowell Columns Building.

The public is invited to attend the inaugural ceremony that will conclude with a reception and lunch hosted by the college.

The program will include personalities representing all aspects of the college constituency.

The Call to Purpose will be delivered by William Andrews, Kerr Leadership Scholar, The Invocation will be delivered by David Horton, President, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and The Litany of Commitment will be led by John Robertson, Executive Director, Council on Christian Higher Education. The Greetings for the Occasion will be brought from constituencies that include Hope Williams, President, North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Elaine E. Myers ’60, The Roanoke-Chowan Region, Ben S. McLean, Mayor, City of Murfreesboro, James H. Royston, Executive Director, Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Rebecca Dawn Lapham, President, Student Government Association, J Brabban, Faculty and Staff of Chowan College and Robert A. Newsome, Jr. ’64, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees of the college.

Additional personalities on the program will include C. Preston McElheney, III, Chair Chowan College Board of Visitors, reading scripture from the Old Testament and Burke Holland, Chair, Chowan College Ministerial Board of Associates, reading scripture from the New Testament.

The Presidential Investiture will be led by Bynum Brown, Chair Chowan College Board of Trustees, Ronald W. McSwain, Chowan College Trustee, and Robert A. Newsome, Jr.

The Inaugural Address, &uot;Lux et Veritas&uot;, &uot;Light and Truth,&uot; will be delivered by President Martin Christopher White.

Tony Cartledge, Editor/President, Biblical Recorder, will deliver The Closing Prayer.

White accepted a permanent contract as president in May 2004 and has been at the helm of the college since July 1, 2003.

As an experienced college president, White states, &uot;The best days for Chowan lie in the future.

I ask that you join me as we write the future of our great college that has stood strong for more than 156 years.&uot;

A schedule of events was unveiled during a recent executive board meeting by Ronald W. McSwain, Chair of the Inauguration Planning Committee.

An Inauguration Worship Service will he held at Murfreesboro Baptist Church on Wednesday evening, September 8, 2004 at 7:30pm with the Reverend Dr. William Leathers, Senior Minister, First Baptist Church, Hickory, NC delivering the message.

Also included in the inaugural events is a Symposium of Regional Literary Arts Celebrating the Life, Legacy and Literature of Mebane Holoman Burgwyn scheduled for September 10-11.

Serving on the Inauguration Planning Committee are Board Members Bynum Brown, Lynette Bunch, Mary Ann Croom, Cheryl McElheney, Elaine Myers, and Hugh Vincent; Chowan Faculty J Brabban and Andrea Eason; and Chowan Staff John M. Tayloe and Sally Tribbett.
