JOSEPH W. HARRINGTON JR.

RICH SQUARE – Mr. Joseph W. Harrington Jr., age 76, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Wednesday, August 25.

Joe was a native of Northampton County and served his country with the United States Army.

Joe married the former Jean Hoggard in 1962 and have had forty-two wonderful years together. Joe was a charter member of the Lion’s Club and a Mason serving with the Masonic Lodge #488 of Rich Square.

He was a member of the Rich Square United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school.

He was a former mayor of Rich Square.

Joe served the community in the funeral business for over 50 years, becoming co-owner of Baugham Weaver Funeral Home of Rich Square in 1964. Joe continued to serve in the funeral business even after it was sold to Garrett Funeral Home of Ahoskie in 1987, working with them part-time.

Sykes Funeral Services purchased the business in 2002, and Joe continued to work part-time with them until July of this year. He has dedicated his life to the funeral business and his work is greatly appreciated by all he has served.

Preceding him in death is his mother, Rebecca Johnson Harrington and father Joseph Wheeler Harrington Sr. Also preceding him in his death is his sister, Lynda Harrington Johnson and his brother, Russell N. Harrington.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, three sisters; Agnes H. Jones, Mary H. Leggett and her husband Donald, Carol H. Godwin and her husband Larry all of Rich Square, four brothers; Gerald J. Harrington and his wife Irene of Falls Church, VA, Robert E. Harrington and his wife Evelyn of Virginia Beach, VA, Carlton Wade Harrington and his wife Martha of Newport News, VA and James Ben Harrington and his wife Terri of Clemons, NC.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the Rich Square United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Roger Cope and Rev. Bob Rogers. The burial will follow at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, NC.

SARA SMITHWICK SUTTON

WINDSOR – Sara Smithwick Sutton, 89 a lifelong resident of Windsor, died Thursday, August 26, 2004.

She was the daughter of Mary McCartha Smithwick and Alfred Jordan Smithwick.

She was preceded in her death by her husband Turner Sutton.

She is survived by her son Turner Bond Sutton and three grandchildren, all of Raleigh.

A graveside service funeral service will be held at Edgewood Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2004 by the Rev. Carol Noy.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be sent to Windsor United Methodist Church, PO Box 238, Windsor, NC 27983 or to the Bertie County Rescue Squad, PO Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983.

CLIFTON LEWIS WOODARD

GARYSBURG – Clifton Lewis &uot;Nut&uot; Woodard, age 63, of Henry Kee Road, Garysburg, died August 25, 2004 at Southern Regional Medical Center in Emporia, VA.

Mr. Woodard was born January 15, 1941 in Northampton County, NC the son of the late Charlie Gray Woodard and Effie Maude Birdsong Woodard.

He was a member of East Tenth Street Church of Christ in Roanoke Rapids and a professional truck driver and was employed by VanCleef Trucking Co., Waverly, VA.

In his early years, he was a special deputy for Halifax County Sheriff’s Dept., a licensed pilot and a professional racecar driver.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Grace Casper Woodard. His daughters, Debra Woodard of Garysburg and Becky Woodard Cheney of Tarboro; his sons Thomas Ray Woodard of Jarratt, VA and Lonnie Gray Woodard of Pinetops, NC; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; his sisters, Martha Royal of Littleton and Jean Melville of Apex; his brothers Charles Ray Woodard of Murfreesboro and Lee Gray Woodard of Broadnax, VA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. at East Tenth Street of Christ in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Minister David Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at the Casper Family Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Tenth Street of Christ Building Fund or to the American Cancer Society.

SAMPSON JAMES

Sampson James, 68, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004. James was born in Bertie County as the son of the late John and Willie James on June 22, 1936. He attended W.S. Etheridge High School. As a young man, he went to Maryland to work and made his home there.

He leaves to mourn: his wife, Bernice S. James of the home; his mother, Mrs. Willie A. James of Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor, NC, Mrs. Maggie J. Tilghman of Wilmington, DE, Mrs. Hellen A. Sterns (Gregory) of Wilmington, DE and Mrs. Annie J. Brown (Richard) of Santa Ana, CA; two brothers, Joseph James of Windsor, NC and John James Jr., also of Winsdor, NC; eight nieces and seven nephews.

Funeral services were handled by Gilliam Funeral Chapel, 706 Ghent Street, Windsor, NC 27983 and held Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Elder Maurice Davenport Sr. officiating.

ETHELYN MYRA DOUGLAS

Ethelyn Myra Douglas, 71, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004. Ethelyn was born on October 1, 1932 in Windsor, NC as the daughter of the late Stonewall Jackson and Wylie Ann Cherry.

She attended the local Indian Woods Elementary School and later Baltimore City Schools when her family relocated to New York where she met and married Fredrick Douglas.

She leaves to cherish her memory: a daughter, Myra Moody of Grand Prairie, TX; two grandsons, one brother, James Cherry of Reisterstown, Maryland; two sisters, Precious Bethea and Hanan El Amin of Baltimore, MD.

Funeral services were handled by Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church, 2330 Indian Woods Road, Windsor, NC 27983 and were held Monday, August 23, 2004 at 12 noon with Rev. Ralph D. White officiating.

DOLLIE M. EBRON

Dollie M. Ebron, 68, died Wednesday, August 19, 2004. Dollie was born in Bertie County on December 9, 1935 to the late Clyde Cherry, Sr. and Mary (Gilliam) Cherry.

She attended Bertie County public schools and Norfolk State University. She was a member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church. She was a housewife and devoted her life to caring for her husband James and her father, both of whom preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Betty Thorpe of Elmherst, NY and Naomi Robinson of Williamston, NC and a host of nieces and nephews.

Gilliam Funeral Home of 706 Ghent Street, Windsor, NC 27983 handled the funeral services held Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cornell Watson and Rev. Steven G. Blunt officiating.
