AHOSKIE – Arthur Lee Wiggins Jr. may have slipped from his earthly bonds in May of this year, but his legacy remains.

Last week, officials with the Atlantic District Fair gathered for one of their many planning meetings for this year’s event, scheduled for Oct. 4-9 at the Fairgrounds located adjacent to R.L. Vann School/Shaw CAPE Center. There, the legacy Wiggins left was felt by those organizing this year’s Fair.

&uot;I cherish the memory of Arthur Lee,&uot; said DuPont Davis, a Hertford County Commissioner who also serves as president of the Atlantic District Fair. &uot;He was a big supporter of the Fair. I don’t know who was more excited when the Fair came to town, Arthur Lee or the children who love to attend our event.&uot;

Davis praised Wiggins for the love the former Mayor and Chamber of Commerce Director had for Ahoskie.

&uot;When someone came in for a tour of our town, the Fairgrounds was one of the first places Arthur Lee would take a visitor,&uot; noted Davis. &uot;He was very proud of the Fair, as he was for all of Ahoskie. He loved this town.&uot;

Davis went on to say that Wiggins, for a number of years, was a very dedicated member of the ADF Planning Committee.

&uot;Without Arthur Lee’s effort, the Atlantic District Fair would not be where it’s at today,&uot; Davis noted.

In recognition of Wiggins’ love of the Fair, Davis, joined by members of the ADF committee, presented a 2004 ADF cap to Wiggins’ sister, Mrs. Gertrude Myers, of Ahoskie.

&uot;My brother enjoyed being with all of you,&uot; stated Myers upon accepting the cap. &uot;He loved the Fair and was proud to be involved with this event.&uot;

As the group began to disassemble after posing for a group photo, Planning Committee member Katie Lee said, &uot;Arthur Lee Wiggins was not only a friend of the Atlantic District Fair, he was one of the best friends I ever had. I still miss him today and his memory will live forever.&uot;
