Virginia E. Eason

COMO – Virginia Everette Eason, 75, a native of Hertford County, died May 2, 2004, at Down East Nursing Home.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Melvin Winborne. Burial was in Bynum-Everette family cemetery in Como. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Annie M. Saunders

AHOSKIE – Annie Mae Saunders, died May 3, 2004 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Curtis Riddick. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Ralph Vann of Ahoskie.

Dorothy Martin

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Dorothy Martin, 70, died May 4, 2004, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Dorothy P. Freeman

COLERAIN – Dorothy Peele Freeman, 77, a native of Bertie County, died May 3, 2004, at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at First Baptist Powellsville Church by the Rev. John White. Burial will be in the Freeman family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Freeman was a member of First Baptist Powellsville Church and a retired nurse’s aide. She was a member of the Eastern Star, deaconess and missionary.

Survivors include two daughters, Blanche Gaskins of Colerain and Jacqueline Freeman of Powellsville; one sister, Claudine Perry of Menola; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a great-great-granddaughter.

James E. Barnes

AULANDER – James Edward &uot;Bo&uot; Barnes, 58, a native of Hertford County, died May 2, 2004, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mill Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Dolberry. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Barnes was a member of Mill Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Chavis Barnes; a son, James Linwood Barnes of Kelford; a daughter, Mary Bell of Suffolk, Va.; his mother, Geneva Wheeler Barnes of Suffolk; brothers, Milton Barnes of Newport News, Lindale Barnes of Suffolk, Kennedy Barnes of Aulander, Randy Barnes of Newport News, Tony Barnes, Charlton Barnes and Alton Harrell, all of Virginia, Wilson Harrell of Kelford and Milton Harrell of Aulander; sisters, Diane Basnight of Kelford, Brenda Cherry o Lewiston, Alice Barnes of Kelford, Jean Walker, Inez Outlaw and Erma Barnes, all of Suffolk, Janet Barkley of Aulander, and Virginia Mitchell of Kinston; and his stepmother, Lillie Mae Barnes of Aulander.

Milton C. Hall

MERRY HILL – Milton C. Hall, 77, died May 2, 2004.

Barbara M. Holloman

AHOSKIE – Barbara Leola Mason Holloman, 62, a native of Hertford County, died April 20, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Holloman Jr.; children, Stanley S. Ballard of Durham, Reginald B. Ballard Sr. of Ahoskie, Curtis E. Holloman of Hershey, Pa., Deloras M. Harris of Washington, D.C., Gwendolyn L. Holloman of Como, and Joy M. Holloman of Greenville; brothers and sisters, Andrew S. Mason of Ahoskie, Henry J. Mason of Hampton, Va., Christine J. Britt of Murfreesboro and Shirley R. Dashield of Durham; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gapie Whigham

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Gapie Frances Daniels Whigham, 70, a native of Colerain, died April 20, 2004.

A service was conducted April 23, 2004 at Trinity United Methodist Church. A graveside service was conducted at Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery in Hopeful, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd.,Tallahassee, FL 32308, or Mayo Clinic, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL.

Mrs. Whigham was the former co-owner and operator of Picture Me Frames. She was an active member of Radiance Garden Club and attended Trinity United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, retired Air Force major Winston Eugene

Whigham; three children, Fran Smith, Meg Moneyham and Curtis Whigham, all of Tallahassee; her sister, Peggy Kersting of Houston; her brother, Grover Daniels of Williamston; and five granddaughters.

Alfred O. Ismael

BRONX, N.Y. – Alfred A. Outlaw Ismael, a native of Bronx, died May 3, 2004 in Bronx.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. Patrick Walton. Burial will be in Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery, Lewiston.

Ismael was a counselor for Greenwich Housing Support Staff/Medical Billing, New York.

Survivors include his parents, Lottie Walton Ismael and Hendricks Ismael of Whaleyville, Va.; and two sisters, Althea Ismael Reed of Norfolk and Jessica Ismael of Whaleyille.

Joseph Bussey

Sergeant Major Joseph (Joe) Bussey, age 83 of Atlanta, GA, died Friday, April 30, 2004.

He was born May 15, 1920 in Decatur, GA, son of the late Legree Bussey and Lessie Welch. The son-in-law of the late Charlie Powell and Willie Mae Powell of Murfreesboro, NC.

He was a member at Thankful Baptist Church in Decatur, GA. Joe entered the Armed Forces during World War II on September 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the Allied Campaigns in North Africa and Italy with the 332nd Fighter Group as Communications Support for the 99th Fighter Squadron, (The Tuskegee Airmen). He married Lula Teresa Powell on July 22, 1949. His military career spanned 29 years.

Joe was also a congressionally decorated Sergeant Major while serving as Chief Logistics Non-Commissioned Officer, office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Logistics, Headquarters Third U.S. Army. His overseas tours included service in Vietnam, Alaska, Okinawa, Guam, Korea, Europe and the Middle East theaters of Operation. Ser-geant Major Bussey’s retired with 29 years Military service. His second Career spanned 14 years with Coca-Cola USA retiring in 1985. He spent the majority of the past 36 years as an active member at the Fort McPherson Post Chapel in Atlanta, Georgia.

Joe is survived by his loving and devote wife of 55 years, Teresa Powell Bussey, a natiave of Murfreesboro, NC now living in Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Joeann Ellis, (Anthony Sr.); one son, Gregory M. Bussey (Tiffany); one brother, Edward Bussey; one sister, Louise Clark; five grandchildren, Joseph Ruffin Jr., Anthony Jr. and Jordan Ellis, all of Georgia, Mason and Maya Bussey of Georgia; sister-in-laws, Sarah P. Allen and Mildred Cooper, both of Murfreesboro, NC; six brother-in-laws, Joseph, William, Cleveland and James Powell, all of Murfreesboro, Linwood Powell of Boston, Mass., Raymond Powell of Flint, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held May 6, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Thankful Missionary Baptist Church, 830

West College Ave., Decatur, GA 30030. Donald Trimble Mortuary, Inc., 1876 Second Ave., Decatur, GA is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Millison Patton

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Millison Anne Whitehead Patton, 65, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Halifax Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of Charles Thomas Patton.

Mrs. Patton was a native of Murfreesboro, NC and the daughter of the late Millard Eley and Annie Laura Felts Whitehead. She was salutatorian of the class of 1956 at Murfreesboro High School, NC State Beta Club Secretary and former organist at Murfrees-boro Baptist Church.

In 1957 she was presented as a Debutante by the Terpsichorean Club in Raleigh. In 1960 she was a cum laude graduate of Wake Forest University and while there a member of the Wake Forest Marching Band. Mrs. Patton received her master’s degree from East Carolina University in 1969 and retired in 1998 with 30 years in the North Carolina public school system.

Mrs. Patton was active in the community and in church work at First United Methodist in Roanoke Rapids since moving there in 1964. Her special interests included Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK), library board, hospital auxiliary, altar guild, study/book clubs, investment club, and playing bridge.

She is survived by three daughters, Grace Patton Allen and Eric Allen of Alexandria, LA, Laura Patton Watson and Rick Watson of Arlington, VA, and Susan Patton Jones and Rusty Jones of Myrtle Beach, SC; one brother, Dr. Eley Whitehead of Murfreesboro, NC; one sister, Martha Whitehead Wilson of Lenoir, NC; and five grandchildren, Anne Patton Allen, Katherine Taylor Allen, Charles Henry Watson, Emma Louise Watson, and Payton Thomas McClellan.

A memorial service was held Friday, April 30, 2004 at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Holt Clark officiating. Interment followed in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC.
