Millison W. Patton

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Millison Anne Whitehead Patton, 65, a native of Murfreesboro, died April 27, 2004, at Halifax Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of Charles Thomas Patton.

A memorial service was conducted Friday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Holt Clark. Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids. Memorial donations may be made to Roanoke Rapids High School, Charles T. Patton Scholarship Fund, 800 Hamilton St., Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Survivors include three daughters, Grace Patton Allen of Alexandria, La., Laura Patton Watson of Arlington, Va., and Susan Patton Jones of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Eley Whitehead of Murfreesboro; a sister, Martha Whitehead Wilson of Lenoir; and five grandchildren.

Julian Owens Jr.

HOBBSVILLE – Julian Wood &uot;Boots&uot; Owens Jr., 74, a native of Gates County, died April 29, 2004, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Clements. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home was in charge.

Owens retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, he was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Ruth Bass Owens; daughters, Betty O. Morris and Patsy O. Plyler, both of Hobbsville; a sister, Mattie O. Wilson of Suffolk; and four grandsons.

Mary Boone

AHOSKIE – Mary Lois Thomas Boone, 101, a native of Hertford County, died April 29, 2004, at Guardian Care Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, with Minister John T. Grant. Burial will be in the Boone family cemetery, Potecasi. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include two children, Rudolph Boone of Conway and Stanley Boone of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Pearl Sims of Norfolk; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Michael Peele

LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – Michael Peele, 53, a native of Bertie County, died May 1, 2004 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Lewiston-Woodville, by Dr. James Baughan. Burial will be in the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lewiston-Woodville Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Peele was a retired machinist and farmer and a member of Lewiston Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Boswell Peele; his daughters, Justa Peele and Marla Peele, both of the home; three sisters, Gloria Moore of Wilson, Bonnie Peele of Greenville and Donna White of Askewville; and one grandson.

Thomas C. Lewis

WINDSOR – Thomas Carrell Lewis, 24, a native of Chowan County, died May 1, 2004, in Chapel Hill.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greens Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Bailey. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Roanoke-Chowan Drug Task Force, PO Box 1101, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Lewis was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church. Agent Lewis was a member o the Roanoke-Chowan Drug Task Force.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Spruill Lewis; his father, Millard B. Lewis; his brother, Millard B. Lewis Jr.; and his paternal grandparents, Carrell and Theresa Lewis, all of Windsor.

Anita A. Austin

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Anita Arnette Austin, a native of Bertie County, died April 28, 2004, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. James E. Jones, Jr. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Sandra Austin White and stepfather, Thomas White of Chesapeake; her father, Jesse Peele and stepmother, Alice of Windsor; a brother, Edward Austin of Chesapeake; maternal grandmother, Beatrice Austin of Hampton; and her paternal grandparents, Robert and Doris Peele o Windsor.

Maggie S. Swann

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Maggie Gray Smithwick Swann, 79, a native of Merry Hill, died May 1, 2004.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by Dr. Mel Kunkle. Interment was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to her church, Taylor Road Baptist Church, 2509 Taylor Road, Chesapeake, VA 23321 or to Bon Secours, Maryview Hospice Program.

Mrs. Swann was a member of Taylor Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, William G. Swann; three sisters, Gladys Swadley, Ethel Mae Cole and Dorothy Stanton; and a brother, Edward Smithwick.

Barbara M. Holloman

AHOSKIE – Barbara Leola Mason Holloman, 62, a native of Hertford County, died April 20, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert L. Holloman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Holloman Jr.; children, Stanley S. Ballard of Durham, Reginald B. Ballard Sr. of Ahoskie, Curtis E. Holloman of Hershey, Pa., Deloras M. Harris of Washington, D.C., Gwendolyn L. Holloman of Como, and Joy M. Holloman of Greenville; brothers and sisters, Andrew S. Mason of Ahoskie, Henry J. Mason of Hampton, Va., Christine J. Britt of Murfreesboro and Shirley R. Dashield of Durham; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

William C. Cooper

PLYMOUTH – William C. Cooper, 80, a native of Bertie County, died April 28, 2004, at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cooper family cemetery. A wake will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home.

Cooper attended Bertie County Schools and was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Ruth Cooper of Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters, Yvonne Johnson of Windsor, Joyce Cooper of Far Rockaway, N.Y. and Maxine Powell of Meridian, MDD; four sons, William Cooper of Philadelphia, Walter Cooper of San Antonio, Texas, John Cooper of Philadelphia and Henry Cooper of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Sarah Williams of Windsor and Elizabeth Payne of New York City; one brother, John Cooper of New York City; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

William Lassiter Jr.

MURFEESBORO – William Jordan Lassiter Jr., 64, a native of Bertie County, died May 2, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, by the Rev. Robert May and the Rev. Steven Curry. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. The family will receive friends at the home.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Coggins Lassiter; a daughter, Liz Dunlow of Roanoke Rapids; his son, William David Lassiter of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Milton Lassiter of Hamilton and Edward B. Lassiter of Woodland; a sister, Okie Lee Bennett of Roxobel; and two grandchildren.

Leo Bryant

RICH SQUARE – Leo Bryant, 62, died April 30, 2004.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Smith-Whidbee Funeral Home, Rich Square, by the Rev. R.L. Knight.

Charlie Futrell

Woodland – Charlie Futrell, 73, a native of Northampton County, died April 30, 2004, at Halifax Regional Hospital.

He was a casket maker and a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Gloria Cooper of Richmond, Va.; one brother, Garland Futrell of Norfolk, Va.; one sister, Marilyn Suitt of Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

A funeral Place will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at

Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Vinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Agnes Reddick

Colerain – Agnes Reddick, 74, died May 30, 2004, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Hattie M. Eure

Gates – Hattie M. Eure, 82, a native of Plainfield, N.J., died May 2, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

She was a member of

Lebanon Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Barry Dewitt Eure of Virginia Beach, Va.;

one daughter, Lois Mizelle of Ahoskie;

one sister,

Lydia Hurdle Spivey of Hobbsville; 14 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

Mary C. Battle

ROCKY MOUNT – Mary C. Battle, 78, died April 30, 2004, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rocky Mount, by the Rev. Richard Battle. Interment will be in the Gardens of Gethsemane. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thorne Chapel Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Louis Dameron Sr.

WINSTON-SALEM – Louis Allen Dameron Sr., 86, died May 1, 2004, at his residence.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wayman AME Church, Enfield, by the Rev. Tracy Tann. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Albert C. Coggins Jr.

Albert Cale Coggins, Jr., 58, of Murfreesboro, NC, died Friday, April 30, 2004.

Mr. Coggins was born in Northampton County, NC and was a well driller with Tarheel Well and Pump.

Surviving are his wife, Geania Coggins, children, Joyce Coggins, Jeffrey Coggins, Jeremy Coggins and Jesse Coggins, mother, Mary Coggins, granddaughter, Jessica Coggins, brother, Russell Coggins and sister, Elizabeth Lassiter, all of Murfreesboro.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie, with the Rev. Robert May officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro.
