Thelma L. Savage

GATES – Thelma Louise Savage, 90, died April 25, 2004, at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church, Drumhill. Crocker Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge.

Mrs. Savage was employed by Planter’s Peanut and worked for 43 years before retiring.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Myrtle E. Jones

CHEAPEAKE, Va. – Myrtle Eva Jones, 92, a native of Bertie County, died April 25, 2004. She was the widow of Willie Ray Jones.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Graham Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Johnson and Pastor Ray Bagi. Burial was in Rosewood

Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hope Haven Children’s Home, 300 N. Mrs. Jones was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Chesapeake, the Chesapeake First Senior Citizens Club and was involved with Meals on Wheels. She supported many active missionaries through Bible Baptist Church and Tabernacle Church of Norfolk.

Survivors include two sons, Charles R. Jones of Norfolk and Gerald W. Jones of Virginia Beach; a brother, Leslie Speller of Williamston; and four grandchildren.

Rewie J. Mizelle

WINDSOR – Rewie Junior Mizelle, 78, a native of Bertie County, died April 24, 2004.

A graveside funeral was conducted Wednesday at the Mizelle family cemetery by the Rev. Jim Kelly. Walker Funeral Home was in charge.

Mizelle was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his sisters, Magnolia M. Evans of Merry Hill, Sabra Ann M. Baker of Windsor and Edith M. Fuller of Boone; and one brother, Finley M. Mizelle of Windsor.

Reva H. Bowser

ST. JOHN – Reva H. Bowser, 80, a native of Hertford County, died April 23, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Elbert Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin Bowser of Ferndale, MI and Walter A. Bowser of St. Paul, MN; three daughters, Joyce Bowser-Branch of Mt. Claire, NJ, Reva Bowser-Gibson of Detroit, MI and Linda Bowser-Pollard of Newport News, Va.; two brother, Whallon Holloman Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and Pastor Issac Holloman of Fair Oaks, Calif.; and 12 grandchildren.

Gale B. Best

SUNBURY – Patricia Gale Brantley Best, 61, a native of Hamlet, died April 26, 2004, in her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Damacus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the church, Hwy. 32, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Mrs. Best was a homemaker. She was a member of Damascus Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh D. &uot;Butch&uot; Best; three daughters, Melia Singleton of Chesapeake, Va., Cindy Buchanan and Marvetta Viola, both of Suffolk; three sons, Chris Best of Chesapeake, Dennis Fernando of Radford and Bo Best of Suffolk; and 12 grandchildren.

Clara Johnson

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Clara Johnson, 87, died April 24, 2004, at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Halifax by the Rev. George Battle. Interment will be in Piney Grove Baptist Church. A visitation will be conducted from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

James W. Hill Jr.

MURFREESBORO – James Wells Hill Jr., 83, died April 27, 2004 in Elizabethtown.

A private interment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. at Murfreesboro Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the memorial service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the home of 419 West High St., Murfreesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Murfreesboro Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 124, Murfreesboro, N.C. 27855. Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Hill was a retired magistrate of Hertford County and a member of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Clary Hill; a son, James Wells Hill III of Elizabethtown; one sister, Jean Hill Ricks of Conway; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jerome Taylor

CONWAY – Jerome Taylor, 42, a native of Northampton County, died April 27, 2004, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Carroll Dickens. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Taylor was a member of Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Madgalene Taylor; one son, Jermaine Vaughan of Raleigh; three brothers, the Rev. Ronald Taylor of Aulander, Stanley Taylor of Murfreesboro and Larry Taylor of Rich Square; and four sisters, Veronica Sanders of Newark, NJ, Selestine Mitchell of Woodland, Paulette Taylor of Conway and Jacquelyn Deloatch of Potcasi.
