Fannie J. Claussen

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Fannie M. Johnson Claussen, 94, a native of Upland, W.Va., died March 10, 2004 in Chesapeake Home for Adults. She was the widow of William Clinton Johnson and Lloyd Henry Claussen.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, was in charge.

Mrs. Claussen worked at the Navy Yard in the Optical Department and the Machine shop during World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include a daughter, Faye Hughes of Virginia Beach; a son, Milton Lee Johnson of Gates County; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Smithwick

FRANKLIN, Va. – Kathryn Smithwick, 44, a native of Windsor, died March 11, 2004, at her Charlottesville residence.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Southampton Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. A. Richard Childress. Mrs. Smithwick received an associates degree from Tidewater Community College. She was a medical records technician at the UVA Medical Center and formerly worked at Southampton Memorial Hospital and Obici Hospital. She was also a member of Franklin Baptist Church in Charlottesville.

Survivors include her parents, Joseph Allen and Marion Grey Smithwick; and a brother, Jerry Allen, all of Franklin.

Robert Phelps Jr.

WINDSOR – Robert &uot;Bobby&uot; Shafto Phelps Jr., 59, a native of Hertford County, died March 13, 2004 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A graveside funeral was conducted Monday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bryant. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Phelps was a former supervisor for Coulburn Lumber Co. and former member of the Bertie County Rescue Squad, the Windsor Fire Department, and the Windsor Lion’s Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Davenport Phelps; and a daughter, Kristy Phelps of Wilson.

Odell Bond

WINDSOR – Odell Bond, a native of Windsor, died March 2, 2004. She was the widow of Austin Bond.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Pleasant Oak Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. John F. Flowers Jr. Interment was in St. Paul Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor. Cherry’s Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include three sons, James Bond and Jerry Bond, both of Windsor and William Bond of Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters, Odell Frazier, Anna Harrison and Mildred Bond of Philadelphia; one sister, Okdellia Slone of Windsor; one brother, Eli Harrell of Windsor; 33 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Nancy S. Cooper

EDENTON – Nancy &uot;Marie&uot; Sawyer Cooper, died March 13, 2004, in Chowan Hospital. She was the wife of Douglas Montgomery Cooper.

A celebration of Mrs. Cooper’s life was held Monday in Cape Colony Church of Christ with the Revs. Thomas Biggs, Bob Young and Donald Sawyer. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Cape Colony Church of Christ, P.O. Box 431, Edenton, NC 27932. Evans Funerals & Cremations of Edenton was in charge.

Mrs. Cooper was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Cape Colony Church of Christ.

Survivors include three sons, Larry Ambrose and David Ambrose, both of Edenton and Michael Ambrose of Ahoskie; two brothers, Henry Sawyer and Dennis Sawyer, both of Hertford; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Martha S. Balmer

RICH SQUARE – Martha Balmer, died March 4, 2004, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

A funeral was conducted March 9, 2004 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Woodland, by Elder Milton Parker. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Rufus Balmer; two sisters, Clara and Bettie of Philadelphia, Pa.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

David Gilliam Sr.

WINDSOR – David Turner Gilliam Sr., a native of Bertie County, died March 4, 2004, at Chowan Hospital.

A funeral was conducted March 10, 2004 at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by Pastor Frank E. Hyman. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Gilliam was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Bernettie P. Gilliam; three sons, Earl Gilliam of Edenton, David Gilliam of Greensboro and Louis Gilliam of Pittsburgh, CA; four sisters, Marie G. Cherry, Mary Sue Outlaw, Mildred Williams and Hannah Bond; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rosa Holloman

BALTIMORE, Md. – Rosa Holloman, a native of Hertford County, died March 11, 2004, at Future Care Nursing Home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by Minister Cheryl Holloman. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie.

Lola Rhea

COLERAIN – Lola Mae Hoggard Rhea, 92, a native of Bertie County, died March 14, 2004, at Williamston Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Leslie Rhea.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Ross Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the funeral services at Ross Baptist Church. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Rhea was a homemaker and a member of Ross Baptist Church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Rosa Moody

GARYSBURG – Rosa Moody, 67, died March 13, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital in Tampa, Fla.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

William S. Turner Jr.

RICH SQUARE – Mr. William Stancil Turner, Jr., age 77, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville on March 11, 2004.

Mr. Turner was a native of Northampton County. He was a member of New Hope Methodist Church. He made his home in Rich Square where he worked and retired farming. Preceding him in death was his mother, Zania Askew Turner and father, William Stancil Turner, Sr.

Survivors include his sister, Greta T. Lassiter and her husband, Kenneth of Rich Square; and one niece, Dawn Owens of Rich Square.

Funeral services were conducted at New Hope Methodist Church in Lasker on Sunday at 2 p.m., March 14, 2004 with the Rev. Joe Stallings officiating. Burial followed in the New Hope Church Cemetery.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Saturday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.
