LASKER – The Northeast Academy Eagles hit the boards, hit their shots, and stepped up on defense, avenging an earlier loss to Halifax Academy, posting a 61-56 conference win Tuesday night.

&uot;I was worried after playing a hard game last night (versus Hobgood Academy), but the guys came out and everyone game 100%,&uot; said Northeast head coach John Brown.

Halifax hit the first field goal of the game, but the Eagles answered with baskets from Hunter Harrell and Lance Jenkins to take the lead 4-2.

Northeast grabbed their biggest lead of the quarter when Rich Edwards sank a trey to give the Eagles a 13-10 advantage.

Two Halifax field goals gave the Raiders a one point advantage, 14-13, with just over a minute in the quarter, but a Buddy Duke 3-pointer put the Eagles back up by two, 16-14.

Halifax hit a duece to close out the first quarter, 16 all.

Harrell had 11, including two 3-pointers, for the Eagles in the second quarter as the teams again traded baskets.

Halifax grabbed a 5-point advantage, 24-19 behind baskets from Josh Langley and Robert Davis.

A Harrell free throw and 3-pointer brought the Eagles to within one, 24-23.

Following a Halifax basket, Harrell tied the score, 26 all, with a trey off an Edwards assist.

Two Halifax field goals put the Raiders up by four, but a duece each from Jenkins and Harrell brought the score to 30 all.

Halifax had a last second shot opportunity, but the Eagles Brian McLean blocked the shot, sending the teams to the lockeroon at the half with a tie ball game.

The Eagles outscored the Raiders 16-12 in the third behind the shooting of Harrell, Edwards, and McLean.

Mclean put the Eagles up for good, 44-42 after he took an Edwards pass to the basket with less than a minute remaining in the quarter.

A field goal by Edwards gave the Eagles a 46-42 lead to close out the third.

Duke started the fourth quarter scoring drive for the Eagles, hitting a free throw with 6:14 remaining in the game to give the Eagles a 47-42 advantage.

The Raiders pulled within four with just under two minutes remaining in the game, 55-51, after field goals by Josh Langley and T. J. Jones.

Harrell hit two foul shots and Jenkins added a field goal to bring the Eagle lead to 6, 59-53, but Jones hit a trey with 22 seconds remaining to close within 3.

Harrell hit 2-for-2 from the free throw line to seal the Eagles victory, 61-56.

Harrell led all scorers with 27 and Edwards added 14 points.

Halifax’s Jones, who had 35 in the Raiders earlier season win, was held to 18 by man-to-man coverage by Duke.

McLean had two steals and two blocked shots.

McLean and Jenkins dominated the boards, with 11 and 7 rebounds respectively.

&uot;Buddy did a good job of containing Jones, and not letting him get off shots.&uot;, said Brown.

&uot;The fan support was great tonight.&uot;, added Brown.

&uot;After playing last night and being tired, they really pumped the team up.

They were the sixth man for me.&uot;

Continued Brown, &uot;That’s a big win, we needed it to stay alive in the conference.

One more win, and we’ll be in a 3-way tie.&uot;

The win brings Northeast to 12-4 overall, 1-2 in conference play.

The Eagles will face Hobgood Academy at home Friday night.

Harrell had 23 and Edwards 18 as Hobgood handed the Eagles a 72-65 conference loss Monday night.

In Junior Varsity action, the Eagles were handed a 32-22 loss Monday night at Hobgood.

Dustin Deloatch had 7 and Cole Vison and Drew Pinnix each added 5 points in the loss.

Against Halifax, Deloatch and Pinnix had four points apiece in the 39-15 loss.

In Varsity Girls action, the Lady Eagles outscored Halifax 14-9 in the fourth quarter, but came up short as the Lady Raiders took the 36-30 win.

Halifax hit a deuce and two 3-pointers to take an 8-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Rebecca Harrell had the only Northeast score of the quarter.

Northeast cut the lead in half after Melissa Jenkins and Shannon Jenkins hit field goals and Hillary Flythe sank a foul shot to give Halifax the advantage 12-6.

S. Jenkins had the first basket of the third quarter to bring the Eagles within four, 12-8.

Halifax scored 7 unanswered points before Lyndal Brown broke the Northeast scoring drought, hitting a free throw to bring the score 19-9.

S. Jenkins intercepted a Halifax pass and took it to the basket to bring the Eagles within 8, 19-11.

Brown had the assist as S. Jenkins hit a field goal to cut the lead to six, 19-13.

Halifax scored eight to close out the quarter with a 27-16 advantage.

The Eagles closed within three after an S. Jenkins basket brought the score to 32-29 with just over 1 minute in regulation.

Halifax shot 4 for 6 from the line in the last minute to build a seven point lead, winning 36-30.

S. Jenkins lead all scorers with 15.

Danielle Long led the Lady Raiders with 11.

&uot;We’ve got to cut down on turnovers,&uot; head coach Joella Brown said.

&uot;We have so many potential scorers, and we’ve got to take advantage of that.&uot;

&uot;Our rebounding has improved,&uot; continued Brown, whose Eagles out-rebounded the Raiders 34-20, led by Brown with 10.

In Monday night’s matchup against Hobgood Academy, S. Jenkins scored 30 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as the Eagles lost 54-50.

M. Jenkins added 10 points for the Eagles.

In Junior Varsity action, Brittany Wade sand two free throws with 34 seconds remaining to bring the Lady Eagles within 3, but Halifax pulled our the 32-26 win.

Jeanie Hargrave scored 14 in the loss.

The Junior Varsity Lady Eagles suffered a loss in Monday night’s game versus Hobgood, as Hargrave scored 6 in the 24-11 loss.
