Elmore Jones

SUFFOLK, Va. – Elmore Jones, 66, a native of Gates County, died January 9, 2005.

Elmore served in the Virginia National Guard, retired as a press supervisor with AmeriComm Direct Marketing and was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Bryant Jones; daughter, Diane J. Johnson of Suffolk; son, Gregory B. Jones of Houston, Texas; brothers, Archie Lee Jones and Roland Jones, both of Suffolk; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jarvis Hearn. Entombment was in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Family requests that memorial donations be made to the Hillcrest Baptist Church, 1637 Holland Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, or to the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Lela Parker

WELDON – Lela Parker, 79, died January 7, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Sessoms. Interment will be in the Chapel Hill Church Cemetery, Rich Square.

Doris S. Eure

AHOSKIE – Doris Chamblee Eure, died January 10, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie..

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in the Shamblee family cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Eure was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Felicia Perry of Durham; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Tulie Crumpler Austin

TUNIS – Tulie Crumpler Austin, died January 11, 2005, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital of heart failure with her family by her side. She was 76 years old.

Born in Zuni, Virginia, she was a graduate of the Suffolk High School Class of ’46. She was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the WMU, and a member of the Winton Baptist Church, where she and her family received much love and support during her many trials with illness.

She was a stroke survivor, a skin cancer survivor, a breast cancer survivor, and a

throat cancer survivor. The spirit and humor she displayed while enduring her treatments and recovery inspired everyone around her.

As a young woman she worked many years for VEPCO and the Birdsong Peanut Company. She was a partner with her husband in his construction businesses, doing mainly office work but occasionally donning a hard hat and banging a few nails along the way.

She was a wonderful, loving wife and mother, and her home was always a warm, safe place to anyone that needed it.

We are sure she has been received with loving arms by her parents, Robert and Janie Crumpler, her brothers, Robert Crumpler, John Crumpler, and Julian Crumpler, her sisters, Janie Crumpler and Christine Youngblood, and her sisters-in-law, Doris Crumpler and Kay Crumpler-Lawrence, who predeceased her and whom she dearly missed.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of 59 years, R.B. Austin, her son, Brad Austin, her brother, Bobby Crumpler and his wife, Trish, as well as her adopted children, who called her Mom.

Her unconditional love sustains us and will live on in our hearts and minds. We will miss you forever, Mom.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Winton Baptist Church, 203 Main Street, Winton, NC, with Dr. Charles C. Harris presiding. Burial will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery, NC Main St., Suffolk, VA. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Hwy 42 West, Ahoskie, NC, on Friday, Jan. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the American Red Cross for the aid of the Tsunami victims.

Eddie W. Worrell

CHARLESTON, SC – Eddie Wilson Worrell, 70, died at his home on Jan. 9, 2005.

Worrell was a native of Murfreesboro, the son of Wray T. and Sylvia Futrell Worrell. He was a previous member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

He served as a Flight Engineer in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. Worrell continued his service time in Charleston, SC with the U.S. Government. He retired after a total of 35 years of service to his country.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy Wiggins Worrell of the home; daughters Linda W. Phillips of Charleston, SC and Valerie W. Mahr of Summerville, SC; his mother, Sylvia F. Worrell of Murfreesboro; and one brother, Bobby Wray Worrell of Houston, Tx.

Worrell is also survived by three grandchildren: Beverly Mahr, Lindsay Mahr and Alan Phillips.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Carol, and father, Wray Worrell.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 12 with full military honors in Charleston, SC.

Madeline Cherry

WINDSOR – Madeline Cherry, 69, died January 11, 2005 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Elmo Baptist Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. A visitation will be held until 8 p.m. Friday. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.
