Knights sweep LA

MERRY HILL – A stingy Terra Ceia defense gave up only two field goals in the first quarter here Tuesday night as the Lady Knights bested Lawrence 41-28.

Kayla Van Staalduinen got Terra Ceia on the board less than a minute into the Tarheel Independent Conference contest and sparked an 8-0 run for the visiting team.

Samantha Mobley hit TCCS’ second bucket before Van Staalduinen scored again. Amber Van Vuren scored the final bucket in the spurt.

Jodi White finally got the Lady Warriors on the board at the 3:22 mark of the first period when she hit a hoop, but Connor Purvis answered with a hoop for the Lady Knights.

Following a pair of Summer Hubers free throws, Jenna Davis hit a hoop for Lawrence to cut the TCCS lead to 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.

Terra Ceia used a Kalissa Van Vuren hoop to push their advantage to double figures at the beginning of the second quarter, but Abigail Harden answered with a hoop and a free throw to get the Lady Warrors within seven.

That magin remained at the half after Hillary Keyzer hit a hoop with just a single second remaining in the quarter to give the Lady Knights a 19-12 lead at the intermission.

Terra Ceia opened the second half strong with a 6-0 run (two hoops from Ruth Stolsbury and one from A. Van Vuren) to extend their advnatage to 25-12.

Lawrence cut the lead to 11 when White buried a deuce with two seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Lady Knights were able to push their lead as high as 19 (39-20) with just over three minutes to play in the contest, but Lawrence used an 8-2 run to close the game to get within 13.

Harden had three hoops during the spurt while White added one.

Knights KO Lawrence boys

The varsity boys didn’t fare much better Tuesday night as Terra Ceia claimed their second victory this season against the Warriors, 60-44.

Lawrence led early in the second period (19-15), but a 10-0 Terra Ceia run put the Knights ahead for good.

Jared Floyd started the streak for Terra Cia when he scored at the 5:33 mark of the second. His hoop was followed by buckets from Phillip Vanderueit and a pair from Bradley Van Staalduinen before Kyle Van Esxendelft hit a pair of free throws to put TCCS up 23-19.

A pair of Gabe White free throws helped Lawrence get with a pair, but Vanderueit buried a trey 25 seconds later to answer for the Knights.

An exchange of buckets left Terra Ceia with a 29-23 advantage at the intermission.

The Knights come out with a 9-3 spurt to open the second half, dealing a blow to any comeback hopes for Lawrence.

Vanderueit, Van Esxendelft and Broderick Simpson scored during the streak which was stopped when Thomas Ward hit back-to-back hoops for the Warriors.

Van Esxendelft answered with consecutive hoops fof his own before Erik Hughes and Van Esxendelft exchanged hoops to leave the Knights with a 46-32 edge after three quarters.

Terra Ceia opened the fourth period by hitting 5-of-6 from the free throw line to extend their advntage to 51-32 and take control of the contest.
