RCCC holds the line on tuition

AHOSKIE – An anticipated increase in tuition rates here at Roanoke-Chowan Community College was just that – considered, but never materialized.

In a recent meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees, the only increase voted upon was a 75-cent hike in the amount students pay for accidental insurance. The current rate of $1.25 will increase to $2.

RCCC President Dr. Mary C. Wyatt said the increase was unavoidable.

&uot;We were not charging enough to even cover what the school has to pay per student for accidental insurance coverage,&uot; she stated. &uot;As of the present time, the school pays $1.65 per student and that amount is always on the rise.&uot;

Those 75 pennies are small when compared to what it costs per credit hour to enroll in a course at RCCC. Fortunately, students will not face an increase in tuition rates. They remain the same as the ones effective for the fall quarter – $35.50 for each credit hour.

There was some discussion among the Trustees over why the student activity fee doubles to $17 (from $8.50) when a student takes six or more credit hours. Wyatt explained there had always been one flat rate ($8.50) for students taking one-to-five credit hours and another ($17) for all hours six and above.

With the exception of the small hike in accidental insurance, all other student fees remained unchanged. They are as follows:

Student ID replacement – $5.

Official transcript – $3.

GED student ID – $1.

Curricular graduation – $30 ($35 for two awards).

Postage to mail an award – $3.

Replacement degree from previous years – $15.

Professional liability insurance – $20 annually. This fee applies to students enrolled in Associate Degree Nursing, Health Care Technology, Human Services Technology and Nursing Assistant programs. It is required to meet the contractual agreements with clinical agencies.

RCCC’s Continuing Education fees will also remain unchanged. They are $50 for a 1-to-10 hour class, $55 for 11-to-30 hours, $60 for 31-to-100 hours and $65 for a course requiring 100-plus hours of class time.

Continuing education students are also required to pay a $1.50 insurance fee, a $20 malpractice insurance fee and a $5 technology fee.
