Johnnie Bryant Sr.

BOYKINS, Va. – Johnnie Franklin Bryant Sr., 82, a native of Lasker, died Nov. 1, 2003, at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He was the widower of Violet Fuller Bryant.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Boykins Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Raymond Bunn. Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to be made to Boykins Baptist Church, 32057 Main St., Boykins VA 23827 or Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 347, Boykins, VA 23827.

Bryant was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was retired from W.A. Cooke’s, Whiteway Foods and farming. He was also a member of Boykins Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Johnnie F. Bryant Jr. of Boykins; a sister, Eunice B. Everett of Joyner; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Louis P. Mathias Jr.

CORAPEAKE – Louis Powell Mathias Jr., 70, a native of Corapeake, died November 1, 2003, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to the Corapeake Ruritan Club, in care of Foster Parrish, P.O. Box, Corapeake, NC 27926 or to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Mathias was graduate of Sunbury High School in the class of 1952, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for four years. For 46 years, he worked with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock and also during part of that time he owned and operated Mathias Florist. An active member of Eureka Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon, was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class where he had been the secretary and treasurer, had served on the building and grounds committee, the cemetery committee, the parsonage committee, and in the church choir. A former Boy Scout leader, he was a charter member of the Corapeake Ruritan Club, served as its chaplain and received its first &uot;Ruritan of the Year&uot; award.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Bryant Mathias; a daughter, Debbie M. Eure of Corapeake; sons, Mark Mathias of Dalton, Ga. and David Mathias of Sunbury; his sisters, Margaret M. Dale of Corapeake and Eunice M. Carr of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.

Gladys B. Overton

WINDSOR – Gladys Butler Overton, 76, a native of Bertie County, died October 31, 2003, at her home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Overton was a homemaker and a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Dunlow of Windsor; three sons, Melvin Overton and James Overton, both of Windsor and Richard Overton of Macclesfield; two sisters, Helen Todd of Windsor and Jean Copeland of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ruth C. Johnson

COLERAIN – Ruth Cherry Johnson, 92, a native of Bertie County, died November 1, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in the Sessoms family cemetery, Colerain.

She is survived by one sister, Lula Sessoms of Colerain.

Quentin S. Cauthorne

AHOSKIE – Mrs. Quentin Semermis Cauthorne, died November 2, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
