William L. Burroughs

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – William Linwood “Bill” Burroughs, 66, a native of Norfolk, died September 7, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Sidney Oman Cancer Treatment Center, c/o Chesapeake General Hospital, 736 N. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23320.

Burroughs was a brick mason. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Harris Burroughs; five daughters, Pamela Farrell of Chesapeake, Leslie MacMillian of Virginia Beach, Chris Midgett of Buxton, Diana Trueblood of Chesapeake and Michelle Grimes of Corapeake; a son, Lee Ferrell Jr. of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Iva Mae Wolfe of Virginia Beach; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mildred M. Knowles

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Mildred M. Knowles, 91, a native of Dothan, Ala., died September 7, 2003 in Chesapeake. She was the widow of Robert W. Knowles.

Mrs. Knowles was a member of Christian Church of Rocky Mount.

Survivors include two daughters, Emma Lee Jamison and Bernice Ann Lewis, both of Portsmouth; a sister, Edith M. Moore of Windsor; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Gene V. Primm. Sturtevant Funeral Home was in charge.

Kathryn S. Hayes

GATES – Kathryn Smith Hayes, a native of Reynoldson, died September 7, 2003 in Franklin, Va.

Mrs. Hayes was member of Reynoldson Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Norma H. Liles of Durham and Nancy H. Turner of Franklin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Reynoldson Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Reynoldson Baptist Church, Gates, NC 27937.

William E. Jones

GATES — William Emerson Jones, 50, a native of Raleigh, died September 2, 2003 in his home.

A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Billy Presley.

Jones had retired as a substation electrician with VEPCO and was a member of Craddock Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Va., and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He is survived by a brother, James E. Jones Jr.

Brodie Sessoms

POWELLSVILLE – Brodie Sessoms, died September 8, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. William Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Sessoms was a member of New Bethany Baptist Church, Harrellsville.

Survivors include his wife, Mary M. Holley Sessoms; two sons, Felix M. Sessoms of Powellsville and Rickie D. Sessoms of Durham; two daughters, Sheree Parker of Blackwood, N.J. and Robin Deloatch of Washington, D.C.; one brother, John Sessoms of Ahoskie; three sisters, Margie Manley of Cofield, Thelma McNeil of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jennie Bodley of Pensi Cola, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
