AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie woman has been charged with felonious hit and run after striking a young pedestrian here Friday afternoon.

Ahoskie Police Chief Steve Hoggard reported that Dorothea Lanell Hansley, 26, of 854 Ahoskie-Cofield Road was arrested and charged in the 1 p.m. incident. She was placed in the Hertford County Jail under a $4,000 secured bond.

The child was injured and transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Her condition is unknown.

The accident report, filed by Ahoskie Police Officer T.V. Wadsworth, stated that the child was struck in the 900 block of North Catherine Creek Road. Witnesses told police that the car, a red Chevrolet station wagon, left the scene after striking the child. One witness gave pursuit and was able to obtain a license plate number.

&uot;I’d like to personally thank that person for having the foresight to help in this case,&uot; said Chief Hoggard. &uot;We don’t recommend that a private citizen give chase following a criminal activity, but things worked out okay in this particular case.&uot;

After obtaining the plate number and vehicle description, a &uot;be on the lookout&uot; bulletin was broadcast on police radios throughout the local area. At 4:30 p.m., Lt. Mike Stephenson of the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle at the Ahoskie-Cofield Road address. He summoned Officer Wadsworth to that location at which time Hansley was placed under arrest.

Hoggard issued thanks to Lt. Stephenson, the local Sheriff’s Office and all other local law enforcement agencies that joined in on the search for the suspect vehicle.
