Drugs, weapons seized in Colerain
Published Thursday, March 18, 2010
COLERAIN – Help from local citizens has led to a drug arrest.
Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said a group of people in the Colerain area had expressed their concern about the possibility of a man residing on Quebec Road selling illegal drugs.
Based on that and other evidence, Bertie County Sheriff’s Detective Kenny Gilliam obtained a warrant to search the home of Marvin Watford.
After serving the warrant, Gilliam and Deputy Blake Mizelle charged Watford with nine felony counts. He was charged with felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of marijuana, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and six felony counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Among the items confiscated by the sheriff’s office were 645.5 grams (nearly 1.4 pounds) of marijuana, two 12-guage shotguns, two rifles, a pistol and another shotgun.
Watford was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
Sheriff Holley said the arrest was part of an on-going operation by his department to target drug dealers in Bertie County and remove them from the streets.
“One of my main targets is that we’ll be very hard against drug dealers,” Sheriff Holley said. “I want to send a message that it will not be tolerated.”

It amaze me that it takes an election to get drug dealers off the street. If you deal drugs in Bertie Co. you have a free pass until its time for an election for the Sheriff position. These guys that are being arrested today are not new to this game and the sheriff knows this. Mr. Watford and Mr. Winston have been dealing drugs in the sheriff backyard for a while. Why do it take an election to get drugs off the street. For the past 11 years you can deal all the drugs you want until that last year before an election. Lets stop being selected on who you arrest until you need votes. Complaints come in all the time about drug dealers and most the time they go unanswered unless you need to make a statement to the public.

The drug issue in Colerain has been ongoing for years upon years....strange that you are just now cracking down on it as election time nears...what happened to all the complaints in years past while you were Chief Deputy???

I agree wholeheartedly steelerfan , it seems like when an election year comes up , all that can be done for votes is done. I live in northampton co. and it is the same here. If you want anything done ....wait for a election year , then it gets done. Try and put in for a pistol permit and wait your 3 to 5 weeks and then you have to go in and it is still sitting on the desk of the person you gave it to in the first place, not to be done until after a couple of inquries. I wish the votes would reflect the type of service we get and then mabey some of these SHERIFFS could coast on a permanent basis!! My wife got dismissed from a sheriff's dept because they were unable to do thier paper work right (for the third time) and was told she would have to wait for her next check to get paid...(two more weeks). After she went to the county mgr. for assistance in getting her check, after following her chain of command, she was promptly fired. The sheriff should not have this type of power and be able to abuse people like has been and is being done. I know in northampton county I will vote for whomever runs against our (beloved) sheriff!!!!
