Rams survive at Lawrence

Published Friday, January 29, 2010

MERRY HILL – Ridgecroft School got the better end of a low-scoring affair here Tuesday night.

The Lady Rams rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter to down host Lawrence Academy 26-22 in Daniels Gymnasium.

Emily Cooke paced Ridgecroft with 11 points while Brice Harrison added six and Miller Bryant had five.

Lawrence was led by Casey Belch’s seven-point performance with Jennifer White adding six and Tayler Sexton chipping in four points.

The Lady Rams trailed 20-15 heading into the fourth period, but Bryant buried a triple just a minute into the quarter to close the gap to 20-18. Sara Hackney’s free throw got the Rams closer before two shots from the charity stripe by Cooke gave Ridgecroft a 21-20 lead.

Tayler Smith helped Ridgecroft add to the lead at the free throw line before Cooke’s bucket at the 3:21 mark gave the Lady Rams a 24-20 lead.

White scored with 1:23 to play to close to 24-22, but Cooke scored again with 45 ticks left on the clock to seal the victory.

The finish may have been good for the Rams, but the start was abysmal. Ridgecroft scored just one basket in the first quarter when Harrison hit at the 1:09 mark.

Lawrence, on the other hand, scored three times in the first quarter, getting back-to-back buckets from Sexton to start the game and a Belch hoop with 53 seconds remaining in the period to lead 6-2.

Harrison scored again to open the second quarter and closed the gap to 6-4.

After an Ashton Lyle free throw extended Lawrence’s lead to three, Cooke erased the Ridgecroft deficit with a three-pointer at the 3:13 mark.

Harrison and Lyle exchanged hoops to leave the score tied at nine-all with 1:31 to play in the first half.

Cooke and Bryant then hit the final two shots of the quarter to send Ridgecroft into the locker room with a 13-9 lead.

Lawrence owned the third quarter just as they had the first, again holding the visiting Lady Rams to just one hoop – this time a Smith bucket with 2:54 to play in the quarter.

The Lady Warriors meanwhile scored 11 points in the period. Belch had the first hoop of the quarter and followed it up with a free throw. Then, in the closing two minutes it was Sexton, Belch, Ashtyn Mizelle and White hitting a bucket each to give Lawrence the 20-15 lead.
