Lady Bears roar by Nighthawks

Published Friday, January 29, 2010

AHOSKIE – Hertford County continued two things here Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears continued to have balanced scoring and they continued to win.

HCHS knocked off Northeastern Coastal Conference foe First Flight 47-34 in a league outing in the friendly confines of the Bears’ own gym. Briante Bond led the Lady Bears with 14 while Jaleesa Chinn had eight, Deondra Morrison seven and Brandi Burden and Sherniece Futrell scored six each.

Haley Caron paced the Lady Nighthawks with 14 points.

It was the second quarter that got the Lady Bears going Tuesday. Entering the second period, HCHS trailed 9-8, but they outscored their visitors 13-8 in that period to grab a 21-16 halftime lead.

Burden started the second period off with a hoop that was followed by a Futrell bucket as the Lady Bears climbed ahead 12-9.

First Flight rallied, however, as Anna Charalmbous scored from the free throw line before a Carson hoop tied the score at a dozen all.

Bond then hit back-to-back buckets to put the Lady Bears on top by four moments before Bryce Sanders and Futrell exchanged hoops.

Burden’s free throw gave HCHS a 19-14 lead and they maintained that five-point edge (21-16) at the intermission.

The third quarter saw the Lady Bears pull away even more thanks to a 7-0 spurt to open the period.

Camryn Jones hit the first hoop of the second half followed by a Bond deuce and a three-pointer by Chinn that made it 28-16 with 4:29 to play in the third quarter.

Following an exchange of hoops, Carson rolled off six straight for the Lady Nighthawks to close the gap to 30-24 before Morrison’s bucket gave HCHS a 32-24 lead at the end of the period.

A Sanders hoop to open the fourth quarter got First Flight within six, but Takia Williams and Bond hit successive baskets to push Hertford County’s lead back to 10.

A three-point play by Carson got the Nighthawks back to 36-29, but Bond answered for Hertford County.

A free throw by Sanders got First Flight within 38-30, but that was as close as they got. Burden sparked a 9-0 HCHS run to put the game out of reach when she hit two from the charity stripe. Morrison, Chinn and Bond also scored during the spurt.

Hertford County improved to 9-5 overall and remained tied atop the Northeastern Coastal Conference standings at 7-1.
