Chowan celebrates record enrollment

Published Thursday, February 4, 2010

MURFREESBORO - Chowan University’s official enrollment for the Spring 2010 semester continues to show the growth of this historic campus, breaking the 1,000 student headcount once again.

“I am pleased to report that Spring semester enrollment at Chowan University has topped 1,000 for the first time since the university became a four-year institution in 1992,” said University Provost Dr. Danny Moore, “And it is the highest spring enrollment since Spring 1982.”

Breaking records again this semester, Chowan University can count 1,002 students among its full-time, part-time, teacher consortium and adult degree completion programs, and expects those numbers to grow even more with the addition of the School of Graduate Studies opening in the fall.

“Last year, in the Spring of ’09, we had 886 students,” explained Chowan President Dr. Chris White. “That’s a 13.1 percent increase, and in the context of the continued economic crunch – that’s phenomenal.”

Dr. White and his senior staff congratulated all staff and faculty for their exceptional recruitment and retention efforts, saying the entire university strove together with hard work and dedication and that the Chowan community should be both pleased and proud.

“I believe our success comes from focusing on who we are, who we serve, and the mission we’re on,” continued Dr. White. “We provide the services we advertise; we do what we say we’re going to do.”

The dramatic increase in enrollment can also be attributed to the successful implementation of more sophisticated and advanced recruitment strategies through the Chowan Admissions Office, including broader social media applications and focused marketing efforts.

“We are able to reach our students more directly, so they can see how Chowan can help them to meet their individual goals,” Dean of Admissions Chad Holt added. “The good word about Chowan is getting out there, and the students are certainly responding.”
