Wrecked vehicles erupt in flames

Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009

AHOSKIE – Two vehicles were involved in a fiery crash near here Monday.

The accident report from the NC Highway Patrol was not ready for release, but it is known that both vehicles involved erupted in flames after impact.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Willoughby Road and Hall’s Siding Road near the Brantley’s Grove community in Hertford County.

Passengers in one vehicle were able to escape their burning van, but one person was trapped inside the other vehicle.

The News-Herald was able to confirm that Hertford County Emergency Management Director Charles Jones risked his life to rescue the driver trapped inside that vehicle.

Personnel from Ahoskie Rural Fire Department, Winton Fire Department, Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Hertford County EMS, Hertford County Emergency Management and NC Highway Patrol were noted on the scene.

In this ever growing and increasingly crowded community, it seems more accurate to report true facts from the news and media.
Mr.Charles Jones showed up to the accident and contributed in an effort that was already in effect.
The true heroes from this day were the common folks running out of their houses to help out before the emergency techs arrived, and the folks who were driving by who stopped to help any way they could.
I Danny Lewis along with my partner Timmy Deese were in the next vehicle directly behind this accident, and since we are mentioning names of some highly paid individuals who were just doing their jobs, I think we need to start here.
There were two black men who gave their hands in effort to get the fire hose stretched out. There was a man dressed in scrubbs who was trying to give some direction to others who wanted only to help, and when we arrived this man was trying to bust out the windshield with a fire extinguisher he had already exhausted trying to put out this fire. We quickly ran and got a big hammer to tear the window out. This vehicle was still running so I knew it had to be shut off. My razor knife was used to cut the seatbelt, while I was under neath the truck holding this woman up
so she wouldn't be dropped on her head. Me and Timmy dragged the unconcious woman from the burning vehicles, and stayed with her until the back board was brought across the field and the wheeled gurney from the ambulance. We also assisted in carrying her across this field, and over a ditch to this rescue vehicle.
With all the witnesses, and the many heroes of this day, there should be more names and praise to the ones who didn't have to stop and help out along with the ones who were doing their jobs.
Thank You;
Daniel E. Lewis
