Meherrins gather for Pow Wow

AHOSKIE – For over 20 years, the Meherrin Indian Tribe has annually opened its native tribal grounds in an effort to educate the public about the rich heritage of America’s first inhabitants.
That effort continues this weekend with the 21st annual Meherrin Pow Wow.
Tribe members welcome the public to attend this historical event, set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 23-25) at the Meherrin Tribal Grounds, located on NC 11 between Ahoskie and Murfreesboro.
Grand entry is 7 p.m. on Friday; 12 noon and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday; and 12 noon on Sunday.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children (ages 3-12).
Lawn chairs are welcomed.
This wonderful weekend celebration is full of the traditional sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Native America. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the top Native American dancers perform various styles of dance while adorned in their colorful regalia, complete with fringe and feathers. Feel the beat of the Native American drum as the dancers perform for top honors.
The Aztec Dancers are among the featured performers.
Another educational aspect of the annual Pow Wow is a replica of a Meherrin Village located on the tribal grounds. There, visitors can experience first-hand how the Meherrins once lived. Included in the display is a traditional longhouse.
Be sure to come hungry as plenty of food will be offered for sale, as will Native American arts and crafts.
