Bertie board commended

WINDSOR – The Bertie County Commissioners got a proverbial pat on the back here last week.
During the second public comments section at the regular meeting of the board, local citizen Brenda Cowan offered congratulations to the five members of the commission for a job well done.
“Ya’ll have done a great job,” Cowan said. “My son told me a long time ago that I should come to these meetings, but this is the first time I’ve been.”
Cowan was among several senior citizens who appeared before the board requesting help with classes that are no longer funded by the North Carolina General Assembly. She has spoken to the board on that topic earlier.
“I have been impressed,” Cowan said.
She then jokingly told the board members she might like to have one of their seats, but added that she thought they were all doing a fine job.
“It has been an education being here today,” Cowan said. “You have handled yourselves in a very professional manner.”
Cowan also praised Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb for being on top of topics in the county.
“You are aware of everything going on,” she said to the manager.
Bertie County Commission Chairman Norman M. Cherry Sr. thanked Cowan for her compliments on behalf of the board. Each other member of the board – Vice Chairman L.C. Hoggard III, Rick Harrell, Charles L. Smith and J. Wallace Perry – took time to say thank you as well.
In other business, the board:
• appointed the Rev. Webb Hoggard to the BMB Shelter Home board;
• approved minutes from July – September;
• set the dedication ceremony for Phase II of the Recreation Complex for 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 2; and
• heard from Planning Director Traci White concerning a request from Lewiston Woodville to enforce minimum housing standards.
