Murder charge lodged

Published Sunday, November 15, 2009

COLERAIN – A weekend shooting has been deemed murder.

Two brothers were shot at a private club in the early hours of Sunday morning. Nathaniel Moody, 36, was killed while his brother, Tyrone Moody, 35, was injured in the shooting.

Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins reported physical evidence and eyewitness testimony have led to an arrest in the case.

James Lewis Perry, 46, of 108 Lua Lane in Colerain is facing multiple charges in the shooting. He is in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under no bond facing charges of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, felony possession of a firearm and possession of alcohol for sale without a permit.

Sheriff Atkins said earlier this week that his department knew the identity of the shooter and had spoken with him, but would wait for further information before proceeding.

I'm confused? Colerain being the small town that it is...alcohol being sold without a permit...in a place that law enforcement had to be aware...took the death of one man and nearly the life of another for this to end? How can this kind of activity and so called "shot houses" exist? This is not NYC or LA. Word of mouth travels like lightening in these small towns. Why isn't law enforcement on top of this kind of illegal activity? Would love to know the answer to these questions!

Vicky, The only information that travels fast in these small towns are about who is sleeping with who, who's baby daddy is with who, and any other rumor mills that may be lurking around. The "no snitching" code run's rampant in all parts of the world, no one wants to get involved and give up the information that is needed.

Also, not to defend Bertie County Sheriffs Office, they are usually short-handed on help. This is due to a number of problems in the Sheriffs Office itself, along with the fact that it is Bertie County. I mean who would want to move to Bertie County to start a life? With a rural population consisting of mostly poor people, you are not exactly going to attract people from all over the state and talk them into living here.

Secondly, I can tell ya from experience that the deputies that are working are loaded up with work. They can't simply dedicate hours upon hours of investigating one shot house.. This "private club" is just one of many. The deputies are covering a fairly large county (land mass wise) and with only 2 working per shift it's not like they can cover alot of ground. Alot of work needs to be done to the Sheriffs Office before it can become an effective and proactive department.

For starters, Bertie County needs a new Sheriff.. and not John Holley either. Bertie County needs someone that will come in, kick a$$ and take names. Not be afraid of letting the deputies do police work, not be afraid of getting government funding for special programs (grants), and take an initiative to implement and enforce a policy and procedure manual that the deputies have never gotten.

With that said, these clowns brought it on their own self. The moody brothers are not new to the scene of trouble. It takes some personal responsibility on their part for what happened to them. Only they could have prevented the death and nearly the life of themselves. Could the Sheriffs Office have done more? Not likely.. As long as people put themselves in these bad situations, they will have to suffer the consequences. So if you live in Bertie County, Becareful who you elect into office for Sheriff and County commissioners. I sure hope the people of Bertie County can get a good Sheriff elected into office.
