Upset in Ahoskie

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

AHOSKIE – One veteran Ahoskie Town Councilman lost his bid for reelection during Tuesday’s municipal election.

Former Hertford County Sheriff Winfred Hardy Jr. upset incumbent Ronald Gatling in the town’s Ward B race.

According to the unofficial numbers from the Hertford County Board of Elections, Hardy tallied 148 votes to Gatling’s 105. There were four write-in votes.

The two other incumbent Ahoskie Council members up for reelection in this voting cycle will return to their respective seats.

In Ward A, Councilman Malcolm Copeland defeated political newcomer Jimmie Rowe, 139-89. There were two write-in votes.

Veteran Council member O.S. “Buck” Suiter Jr. was unopposed for the At-Large seat on the board. He received 318 votes on Tuesday. There were 29 write-in votes.

Incumbent Mayor Linda Blackburn will return to office as she gained 352 votes. She did have late opposition as Donald Kirkland announced his write-in campaign early last month. There were 82 write-in votes for mayor, but it is not known how many of those Kirkland received.

Great, like he was such a good sheriff.

A travesty. It was all former Supt. Dennis Deloatch's doing. Deloatch is still so bitter and small minded about not having his contract renewed that he wants to personally destroy anyone who he believed was not supporting his bid to be rehired. Deloatch thought that Gatling didn't support him and Deloatch campaigned tirelessly against Gatling.
Hardy is a good person but he does not have the ability to be an effective councilman. He will just go along with others. Gatling worked hard, and prepared himself for the position. Gatling was knowledgeable about the issues, and represented well the people of his district.
Lay this travesty at the foot of Dennis Deloatch. He is pathetic. He was not rehired because he was ineffective. Our schools have been progressing ever since he was removed as the Superintendent. At the next election we should defeat him as a board of education member. He is not contributing anything on that board.

Give Hardy a chance. He may do better at this job then he did when he was Sheriff. As for Dennis Deloatch, he is only on the Board of Education for one reason, REVENGE. He like several others has an agenda. He was not effective with our children and he does not protect the employees. Whatever his mission is you can be sure of one thing....What goes around comes around.

I don't think this comment is fair to Mr. Deloatch. It seems to me that anyone can write negative comments about people on this page and hide behind themselves. Mr. Deloatch has helped more for our children and done more for our district than many people who have worked here or lived here each day. Some people seem to forget where we were and with his help we are continuing to move forward. For those who say he is about"Revenge", read the comments that have been posed in the newshearld about what he says and does. It seens that this is an excuse that some use to cry "WOLF". As supertendent, he did what was right and fair for students and others. Because he was not apart of those who were only interested in looking out for themselves and thier friend, he had to reach out on his own. Infact, if anyone thinks he is to blame for Ronald Gatling's failure to win his seat to represent his community, then they are not aware that it was the people who voted for Hardy who decided that they wanted a new town council representative, not one vote who made the differnce. Not saying that Mr. Hardy is the best worker but apparently someone believes in him other than one person. Mr. Hardy said he is aware of the concerns of the people in his district.

To Edu4life2(Dennis Deloatch): That's a good self-serving response,Dennis Deloatch. We know this is you writing this comment about yourself.

Justonce - Give me a break!!! How can you and others blame Dennis Deloatch for the failure of Mr. Gatling's constituents to get out and vote? When you have less than 300 folks voting, what you should actually be complaining about is voter apathy and how the candidates failed to motivate their supporters to get out and vote. I have communications with Mr. Deloatch on at least a bi-weekly basis and I have never heard him disparage Mr. Gatling in any way. As a matter of fact, I never heard him offer support for Mr. Hardy either. To my knowledge, he never supported Mr. Hardy's campaign or "campaigned tirelessly" against Mr. Gatling. Did Mr. Deloatch erect any signs supporting Hardy? Did Mr. Deloatch pass out flyers supporting Mr. Hardy? Did Mr. Deloatch buy some radio time supporting Mr. Hardy? Were there any negative ads or literature distributed by Mr. Deloatch? If you have some verifiable hard evidence to support your claims, please bring it forth. Otherwise, your allegations are baseless at best and probably more akin to being absurd. What you should have done, since you are a Gatling supporter, was put some real effort in getting his supporters to the polls. It would have only required your getting 44 folks to votes for Mr. Gatling to change the outcome of the election. Finally, if you think Mr. Deloatch is doing such a horrible job on the school board, you should bring forth the concrete evidence to support your claims and have him voted out of office. Otherwise, when it comes to Mr. Gatling’s election loss, you should probably place the blame Mr. Gatling’s campaign for not being effective in mobilizing his base of supporters to get out and VOTE!!!

Justtwice, it is obvious you don't live in our district. Mr. Deloatch was continuosly calling and speaking with people face-to-face, spreading negative and baseless comments about Mr. Gatling. There are numerous people who can attest to this.
As far as Mr. Deloacth-I assure you he will face opposition in the next elaction. His service on the board has been pathetic.

It's all sad. You're all sad. Any way you slice it, it all spells pityful - Gatling, Deloatch... It's all just pityful. The adult agendas on the backs of children - goodness! I wish someone would take a stand for children. Maybe Hardy will. The election is over. Let's just get on with it. I agree with the person who said that everybody ought to be concerned about voter apathy. Looks like just the candidates familys voted.

Lies, all lies. Mr. Winfred Hardy, former sheriff, former chairman of the Democratic Party announced to several leaders and others that Mr. Dennis Deloatch did not compaign for him during his campaign against Mr Ronald Gatling. He did not pass out literature, make calls, or cary anyone to the poles, as been said. This is simply not the truth. Derrick campaigned for me said Mr. Hardy. I do not know why Mr. Deloatch's name was mentioned when he was never involvedn with me or my campaign. We have known Mr. Hardy for over 15 years and have always known him to be honest and upstanding. He has no reason to lie and did not win his campaign on lies. We find him to be truthful and honorable. Thanks for the truth Mr. Hardy. This is one of the reasons you were chosen.

A travesty in deed. Conspiracy, lies and down right digraceful. It was revealed that Councilman Ronald Gatling and board member Mr. Wendell Hall conspired and lied about Mr. Dennis Deloatch and Mr. Winfred Hardy's campaign. It was Mr. Wendell Hall who wrote these dispictable lies against another board member. You Mr. Hall an elected official yourself who created and used false information to try to discredit another person's character. We all know it was you Mr. Hall who did not want Mr. Deloatch to be on the board because you said it during his campaign. It was you who told people he had nothing to offer on the board. Yess, you who referred to him as being pathetic. You Mr. Wendell Hall, and elected official, board member and state representative who conspired, told and lied on another person to acquire your revengue. It was your bitterness and your friendship for Mr. Gatling that caused you to conspire and scheme a plan to try to discredit Mr. Hardy and Mr. Deloach. It is you who cant rest with Mr. Deloatch's presence and contributions to this school system.
How revengeful, disgraceful and pathetic is your tatics. It is you, who is pathetic. We wonder what tatics will you try on others.
