Animals removed from Lewiston home
Published Saturday, May 9, 2009
LEWISTON WOODVILLE – Nearly 50 animals were removed from a home on Mitchell Street here Thursday morning.
According to Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins, tips were received by the Lewiston Woodville Police Department concerning the home and the number of animals being kept there.
“They called us to help with the investigation,” the sheriff said. “We drew a warrant and served it Thursday morning.”
When officers arrived at the home, which is occupied by Stephen Kyprinides according to the search warrant, they were unable to enter the dwelling because of the high levels of ammonia.
Sheriff Atkins said officers had to call for a Lewiston Woodville Fireman who went in with a mask and opened doors to ventilate the home. Once they were inside, deputies found 46 dogs and three cats in the home.
“I can’t describe the filth,” the sheriff said. “The home was unsanitary and unclean.”
Sheriff Atkins said it was necessary to enter the dwelling not only for the safety of the animals, but for the person’s well-being. The ammonia levels had reached an unsafe level.
So far, the 49 animals have been dispersed to the Bertie County Animal Shelter, the Chowan County Animal Shelter and two various homes of humane society members.
“We can’t handle 49 animals on top of our daily load,” Sheriff Atkins said, making reference to the Bertie shelter.
The sheriff called in a veterinarian from North Carolina State University to assist with the case and also had help from the County Chowan Sheriff’s Office.
He said charges are pending in the case, but none have been filed at this time.

Things like this is sick. Those poor animals. I think they should put him in the filthy house, nail the door and windows closed and see how he likes it, then bam problem solved.

It was Chowan County Animal Control that assisted, not the Chowan Co. Sheriff's Office.

I lived across the street from this man and I can tell you first hand that his house smelled HORRIBLE! You could smell his house over Perdue Farms and anybody who has every smelled that can tell you that it is awful. I lived there for probably a year and I grew up in the house directly across from him and I never once saw him take real groceries into that house. The only thing he ever took into his house was milk and dog food. The police were called many times on him and nothing was ever done about it so thank god for whoever finally got something done.

Absolutely horrible for this man to keep animals like this. I have had dealings with the same man, he used to own a single-wide trailer on lake drive and was kept in the same circumstances. He had enough money to purchase all kinds of chain link kennels and moved into that home on mitchell street(though he never put a dog in it). The smell in his single-wide trailer was strong enough that you could not enter the home either, I can recall having the breath knocked right out of me when the door was opened.
Obviously the man is not mentally well, no person in their right mind would live in such conditions, yet he slept and lived in that very same house.
EricaLyn is correct, He lived on lake drive 4+ years ago and it took every bit of that long before something was finally done. Thank God they took those animals out of that filth!
