BOC offers assistance

WINDSOR – The Bertie County Commissioners did what was in their power to come to the aid of two entities in the county last week.
On Monday, March 16 during their second regular meeting of the month, the board voted to help the town of Lewiston Woodville and the Perrytown Fire Department.
During the meeting, Alvin Basnight of the Perrytown Fire Department presented the commissioners a request to adopt a resolution asking the North Carolina Department of Transportation to pave the driveway of the department’s new fire station.
“We are 95 percent complete with the new firehouse,” Basnight said. “We would appreciate your support in adopting the resolution.”
The Perryton Volunteer Fire Department is building the new facility next to the community building. The new fire station will replace the old building which is attached to a local service station.
Commissioner J. Wallace Perry made the motion to adopt the resolution and authorize Commission Chairman Norman M. Cherry Sr. to sign it. Commissioner Rick Harrell seconded the motion which passed unanimously.
Moments later, the board adopted another resolution that would allow them to sell an out of service vehicle from the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office to the town of Lewiston Woodville for use as a police car for the sum of $500.
“We need it in Lewiston,” Cherry said. “I saw the current police car on the back of a wrecker today.”
The vehicle in question is a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria which is in need of a door handle, according to Bertie County Manager Zee Lamb, but is otherwise in good condition.
Commissioner Charles Smith made the motion to adopt the resolution and sell the vehicle to the town with Harrell offering a second. The motion passed without objection.
In other business, the board:
• removed a member of the Nursing Home/Adult Care Home Community Advisory committee for failure to attend meetings;
• approved the tax ledger error report;
• met as the Board for Water Districts I, II, III and IV to approve the applications for two grants; and
• designated officials to sign papers for mosquito control.
