Red Barons edge Hertford County

GATESVILLE – Gates County High School claimed a 6-3 tennis victory over Hertford County here last week.

The Red Barons won four singles matches and two doubles’ contests to secure the victory, moving to 2-2 overall for the season.

Gates County’s Jeremy M. Smith topped Julius Fordos 10-4 in a battle of the top seeds while the Red Barons’ Joshua Smith won at number two, defeating Mike Jones 10-5.

Mit Patel of Hertford County grabbed the victory at number three as he defeated Thomas Schrader by forfeit.

Jerry Johnson helped the Red Barons win by defeating Antonio Watson 10-6 in the fourth seeded battle.

Hertford County’s final singles victory came when Justin Venli defeated Gates County’s Jessie Couch 10-5.

The Red Barons secured their 4-2 edge heading into doubles when Jeremy A. Smith defeated Charlie Everette 10-8 in the numbers six seed contest.

In doubles action, Gates County quickly secured the overall victory when Jeremy M. Smith and Johnson defeated Fordos and Patel 10-8. The second seeded doubles team of Joshua Smith and Jeremy A. Smith also won, defeating Jones and Domonic Smith 10-3.

Hertford County won the number three doubles contest when Donte Fennell and Tucker Johnson defeated Antonio Watson and Everette 10-2.
