Deadly twist to home invasion
Published Thursday, December 10, 2009
RICH SQUARE — The suspect in a Sunday night home invasion has been found dead.
According to Northampton County Sheriff’s Chief Detective Captain D.M. Harmon, the body of Matthew Hamilton Jacobs, 32, of Rich Square was discovered Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area behind the residence he allegedly attempted to rob.
Meanwhile, law enforcement is on the look out for another suspect in the crime who has been identified as Keyachia Carolette Joyner, 29 of Woodland.
On Sunday, the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in reference to a home invasion at a residence, occupied by a couple, their three children and a family friend, on Highway 258 near Rich Square.
The family friend, Calvin Clark, 42, formally of Murfreesboro, answered the front door of the residence to Joyner. As Clark answered, Joyner allegedly moved to the side to make way for Jacobs, who was brandishing a shotgun. After Jacobs demanded money, Clark tried to close the door and Jacobs shot through the door of the residence.
Harmon said upon further investigation it was discovered Clark shot back at Jacobs, who suffered gunshot wounds that would eventually lead to his death.
Clark was also injured during the home invasion with a gunshot wound to his torso. He is still hospitalized at Pitt Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
After the two men exchanged gunfire, Joyner and Jacobs fled the residence. Harmon said Joyner got into a green Oldsmobile Alero while Jacobs fled on foot behind the residence.
Harmon said the Alero was found abandoned Tuesday morning and later that afternoon Jacobs’ body was discovered in the woods.
Harmon said the body was transported to Pitt Memorial Hospital for an autopsy. He said the results show Jacobs died of gunshot wounds.
He added the investigation is ongoing.
Harmon said warrants have been drawn for Joyner’s arrest. He urged those with information of her whereabouts to call the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office at (252) 534-2611 or the Northampton County Crime Stoppers at (252) 534-1110.

I praise Mr. Clark for his quick actions. I hate the man was killed but as far as I am concerned he got what he was asking for. More people should be this aware and ready to act. Mabey then the crime rate would decrese. A persons home should never be invaded in such a manner. This outcome is appropriate in my opinion!!

I agree with cherokee for the most part. I do not hate that the man was killed though. The Jacobs crew out of lincoln park have always been known to be trouble. If you ask me, the outcome is appropriate and fully the responsibility of their own actions. I saw a sticker that reads "If you come through these doors, I will kill you". I second the motion, if you come through my door, I will kill you. I have no qualms about killing a man or woman that decides to come inside of my home. Frankly I have no qualms of killing anyone, anywhere that I feel that my life or one of my family members lives are in danger. If you choose to be a crook, thug, thief, rapist, etc., then you must accept the fact that being killed is a job related hazard. I am sure there will be plenty of people crying at your funeral, remembering what a "good person" you were. I will be sitting at home eating a steak dinner with my family. Mr. Clark refused to be the victim, sounds like he was able to keep his composure and put lead on target. I commend him for refusing to be the victim. Maybe the reality check given to the thug community will serve its purpose for atleast one person.

For the one that posted that the person that died got what he deserves, i pray God's mercy on your soul. First of all, the whole story has not been told yet and I am praying that the truth be revealed! No matter how things played out, that was a soul lost and a family in grieving. Instead of judging the situation, pray that the truth be revealed and that the family of the ones who life was lost be comforted in the time of sorrow!
You talked about sitting home eating your steak dinner with your children, well, picture this in your mind before you choose to judge another troubled youth, your child decides to go out on the town and get involved with the wrong group of people and the situation play out and his/her life is taken. Would it be as easy for you to then sit back and eat your steak dinner and judge others.
Compassion is the key and even though you may not have robbed or killed but you have done something in your life where you deserved a different outcome and God had mercy on your soul!
Im yet praying for the ones that responded and also the family of the people involved in this grevious situation!

Prosperous, You can save your prayers for the next person that trys to commit a felony in your home. I can pray for myself.
The truth you speak of is right in front of us. I hardly doubt that the man somehow invited Mr. Jacobs to his door with a loaded shotgun. I somehow doubt that Mr. Clark invited this kind of trouble.
If my child ever does choose to follow that lifestyle, he will have to face whatever consequence's come his way. Wether it is prison, or someone kills him. Do I want him to live that lifestyle, certainly not. I hardly call Mr. Jacobs a "troubled youth". Mr. Jacobs was a grown man, 32 years old and plenty capable of making his own decisions. If you are still falling into peer pressure at 32 years old darwin's theory will be proven eventually.
And you are right to a certain extent, I have never robbed, killed, or stolen from any other person. I respect people and their property. I also respect the right to defend one's self and their property. If someone chooses to cross that line, they get what they deserve. Again, I said chooses, because we all make choices in life, some are just better at it than others.

I agree 100% with the_POPO. You are correct and Mr. Clark should be commended for his actions for keeping calm trigger pressure, under stress and putting his lead on target, and hopefully, center mass. Good work Mr. Clark and God bless you. And as the_POPO has stated: We can pray for ourselves!

It is sad to know that we glorify death. Taking the life of another and we express happiness, sad be on you on judgment day. I know you say you don’t need our prayers but I pray God has mercy on your souls. What that man did was wrong, he should have went to prison , but to take a life and you find joy init sad be on you. There is one God and he doesn’t make mistakes, and when the ten commandments was written it stated though shall not kill, not kill all the bad, again I say sad be on you. There is life and death in the power of the tongue, and it’s sad to say you done curse yourself (Who God Bless Can’t No Man Curse; and Who God Curse Can’t No Man Bless). You can tell a lot about a person just by listening to them, and by the looks of it you are a cold hearted individual. Then to insult family and friends you know you wrong. The life that we live will speak for us but once again you are not the judge only God is and I pray , God knows I pray that he has mercy on your souls.

to black pearl- what would you have suggested Mr Clark do?.... invite them in for coffee and give them a good talkin to. Are you kidding me? I don't think any one is glorifying death, but at the same time how else can you defend yourself against someone with a gun pointed at your head? After all, they were there with a GUN trying to ROB him. NOT INVITING HIM TO SUNDAY SCHOOL!! GET REAL! I agree with popo and 27910 100%.

I basically agree with popo,27910,and tedwards, but I have a suspicion, not based in fact mind you, that drugs may have been involved. It strikes me as a little to convenient that Clark, a family friend, who just happened to be visiting, just happened to be carrying a weapon. Maybe Clark is a law abiding citizen, who was rightfully carrying a weapon for his own protection... or maybe Clark is involved in drug activity, and he was carrying a weapon related to that activity.
Did Jacobs just randomly choose that home to rob, or did he believe money from drug sales would be found there? I don't know. But it wouldn't be the first time that a drug dealer was the target of a robbery.
As for Jacobs, he probably got what he deserved. But let's not make Clark into a hero just yet.

No , I don't think he should invite him in for coffee, but I don't feel posting on this page that you where glad someone is dead. There is no joy and glory when a life is taken. I agree defend yourself, but I don't agree with the popo or 27910 taking lite of the sitution. If everyone had the same thinking pattern as these individuals the world would be much worst than it is now. Maybe someone should invite you and the popo, and 27910 to Sunday school to learn about that word that holy word. My point is I don't agree with comments made on this page, defending your self find and good, but to say people will say good things about this person, and the family will be crying and all that, it was dead wrong no matter what you say. You say they don't glorify death yes they are they are like cheer leaders because a man toke another mans life and they are glad it happened. SAD BE ON THEM; GOD HAVE MERCY ON THERE SOUL

blackpearl, I never said that I was glad that Mr. Jacobs died. I merely stated that he got what was coming to him, period. Heck, I wish the world was full of rainbows and cupcakes and everyone ran down the road holding hands singing "we are the world". But guess what, there are BAD people in this world that infringe on your right to a safe and private home. One thing is for sure, Mr. Jacobs will never break into another house or committ a felony offense against someone else, that I can gurantee. You can baby them, offer them cookies and milk, etc. I will keep my guns and sleep in peace.

Simply stated when a person is threatened with deadly force then they have the right by law and everything moral to use deadly force back. If a life has to be lost and you and someone in your family are saved, then in my opinion, thank god!! As far a drugs being involved, that is a good senerio of probabilities, but even if there were drugs involved. A home was being invaded and lives were at stake. I hate the loss of a life, but if I have to choose mine or yours....sorry for you. I will keep my guns and sleep in peace.
