NEA ladies sweep final two foes

JACKSON – Northeast Academy’s girls tennis team closed out their regular season here this week by sweeping a pair of opponents.

On Monday, the Lady Eagles dropped only two matches in a 7-2 win over Oakwood School.

In singles play, Northeast won five of the six matches. Leading the way were top-seeded Carly Stephenson (an 8-0 winner vs. E. Wood), #2 Tracy Clark (defeated E. Ozborne, 8-1), #3 Lauren Flythe (posted an 8-0 victory vs. E. Whitehurst), #4 Jessie Martin (an 8-0 winner over M. Averette), and #6 Cassie Revelle (an 8-4 decision vs. D. Lindsey.

Stephenson and Martin (8-1 winners over Ozborne/Whitehurst), and Clark/Flythe (an 8-2 decision over Wood/Averette) posted victories in doubles action to complete NEA’s 7-2 win.

On Tuesday vs. Ridgecroft, Northeast used a 3-0 sweep in doubles play to defeat the Lady Rams, 6-3.

The match-deciding doubles action was razor close in two matches as Stephenson and Martin edged past Taylor Jenkins/Matty Grace Gilliam in a 9-8 tiebreaker, while Clark teamed with Savannah Revelle to defeat Alex Evans/Lauren Harrell by an 8-6 count.

In #3 doubles action, the NEA duo of Flythe and Cassie Revelle won by an 8-3 decision over Holly Robertson/Annie Dilustro.

The two teams gain a split in the six singles matches.

Northeast gained the upper hand in the #1 (Stephenson over Jenkins, 8-1), #2 (Clark over Gilliam, 8-4), and #4 (Martin over Dilustro, 8-0) matches.

Ridgecroft was victorious in the #3 (Harrell over Flythe, 8-3), #5 (Roberston over S. Revelle, 8-1), and #6 (Evans over C. Revelle, 8-2) matches.

The Lady Eagles (8-5 overall) now advance to the NCISAA Division 1-A State Tournament as the #6 seed. They will travel to Hickory to meet third-seeded University Christian High School (9-2 overall) at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Catawba Country Club courts.

Ridgecroft (7-6 overall) is the #4 seed in the state tourney. They will host #5 Lawrence Academy (5-5 overall) in an opening round match scheduled for Saturday.
