AHOSKIE – Joanne Powell, LPN/ Special Projects Manager for Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center, was selected as Hertford County’s SHIIP Volunteer of the Year during the annual SHIIP Coordinator’s Conference held in Greensboro.

Powelll was presented with her award by Barry Mowbray, SHIIP Regional Manager for the Northeast Region at the SHIIP Volunteer Recognition Celebration held at RCCHC on Aug. 26.

Powell works tirelessly along with Alicia Mitchell, Respite/ SHIIP Coordinator for the Hertford County Office of Aging, to make sure the Medicare beneficiaries of Hertford County get the best assistance possible during the Medicare Part D OEP and throughout the year.

Gifts of appreciation from SHIIP were given to all the volunteers in attendance.

SHIIP and the Hertford County Office of Aging want their volunteers to know that they could not do what they do for the community without them.

Medicare beneficiaries receive much needed information when it comes to new updates on every aspect of the Medicare program. Some of the things the SHIPP volunteers do include, but are not limited to, doing actual enrollments in the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans, schedule appointments for Medicare Counseling, making referrals, passing out Low Income Subsidy  (LIS) information throughout the community, doing actual LIS applications and helping people that are coming up to retirement age and need to know how to get Medicare.
