NEW YORK, NY – Mary (Gatling) Andrew, age 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 23, 2016 at The Dawn Hospice in New York, New York.

She was born November 6, 1941, in Waverly, Virginia (Surry County). She was one of the three children to the late Fred and Annie Elizabeth (Britt) Gatling. Mary was joined in holy matrimony to the late Martin Lethan Andrew who preceded her in death in 2004.

She was a 1961 graduate of Robert L. Vann High School in Ahoskie, NC and relocated to Brooklyn, NY. She was employed at several apparel companies and retired as a home health aide with Self-help Community Services, Inc. of New York.

Mary is survived by two sisters, Cora Ruffin (James) of Ahoskie, NC and Florence Gatling-Gordon of East Orange, NJ; two nieces, LaTrenda Smith (Byron) of Snellville, GA and Yalanda Ruffin of Raleigh, NC; and two nephews: James LeMar Ruffin (Keisha) and Artemus Ruffin of Raleigh, NC. She also leaves three great nephews: D’Shaun Cooper, Chapel Hill, NC, De’Veron Saunders, Ahoskie, NC and Kayvon Ruffin, Raleigh, NC; four great nieces: Da’Neisha Saunders, Ahoskie, NC, and Nautica, Aniya and Kaliah Ruffin, Raleigh, NC; one aunt, Luvenia Futrell of Woodland, NC and one uncle, Clinton Alton Britt of Cambria Heights, NY.

Services took place Saturday, May 28, at LaGree Baptist Church, 362 West 125th Street, New York, New York. The Rev. Wayland Williams, Jr. officiated. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery in Linden, NJ.

Arrangements were entrusted to Owens Funeral Home, Inc., 216 Lenox Ave., New York, NY.
