WINTON – John L. Askew, 84 of Winton, NC transitioned on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Autumn Care of Suffolk. He was a native of Sussex County, VA and the son of the late Selman Askew and Sallie Mae Askew. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Combo, and second wife, Beulah P. Askew.

He retired from Georgia Pacific in Ahoskie, NC after 24 years. He was a member of Phillipi Baptist Church in Cofield, NC.

He leaves to cherish his memory children one devoted daughter, Shildred “Shelia” Watford of Suffolk; five sons, Ivan B. Askew of Highland, CA, Clarence J. Askew of Reidsville, NC, Charles S. Askew of Greensboro, NC, Michael T. Askew of Harrellsville, NC and John “Junebug” Askew of Durham, NC; sisters, Elois A. Whittle of Baltimore, MD and Elsie Marie Riddick of Cofield, NC; brothers, Isaac Askew and Grady Askew of Pennsylvania, James Bo Weaver of Ahoskie, NC and Lindsey Newsome of Newport News, VA; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A homegoing service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 29, 2016 at Phillipi Baptist Church, 550 NC Hwy 45S in Cofield, NC officiated by Rev. Charlie Carter. Interment will be in Phillipi Church Cemetery.

The family will be receive at 2046 Queens Point Drive in Suffolk and also from 3 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 28 at Crocker Funeral Home.
