FRANKLIN, VA – John Wallace “J.W.” Sumner, Jr., 85, passed away March 27, 2016 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in North Carolina, he was a son of the late John Wallace Sumner, Sr. and Georgia Howell Sumner.

He graduated from Murfreesboro High School in 1948 and served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a retired supervisor at Union Camp Corporation. He was an avid horseman. After retirement he was a horse trainer and in partnership with William M. Camp, Jr.

J.W. was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, having served in several capacities, and a member of the 39er’s Club. He was also a member of the Virginia Horseman’s Association, USTA and Cloverleaf.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Josephine F. Sumner; a daughter, Jo Ann Grossman and husband Burt of MN; three beloved grandchildren and always in his heart, Reno, Myles and Rudie Bryant; a sister, Ruth Boone of Pendleton, NC; one brother, Livingston Sumner of Como, NC, several nieces and nephews and a host of cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Walter, Lokie and Fred Sumner.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday March 30, 2016 at Franklin Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Gibson officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in J.W.’s memory to Franklin Baptist Church, 208 North High Street, Franklin, VA, 23851.
