In Tuesday’s Democratic Primary, Wray, who lives in Gaston, defeated the challenge of local minister Franklin D. Williams Jr. of Weldon.

The unofficial results show Wray with 7,354 votes (52.60%) while Williams was named on 6,628 ballots (47.40%).

“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the voters of District 27, Halifax and Northampton County for re-electing me to the NC General Assembly. I am honored and humbled that you have placed your trust in me and I will continue to serve you in any way I can. I would also like to send a special thanks out to those who have helped with my campaign, I couldn’t have done it without your continued support,” Wray wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday night after the election results were in.

Wray carried both counties (Halifax and Northampton) that comprise District 27. He actually faired better in Halifax where he collected 4,940 votes compared to 4,244 for Williams. In Northampton, Wray edged Williams by a slim margin (2,414 to 2,384).

Over one-third (2,263) of the votes earned by Williams came via the One-Stop and Absentee by Mail voting methods.

Wray, a small business owner, has served District 27 for five terms.
