KELFORD – Bertie County Sheriff John Holley says his department is investigating a series of break-ins that occurred in the Roxobel-Kelford area on Sunday evening-early Monday morning.

Holley said as many as four incidents were reported to the Sheriff’s Office, and that mostly small items were taken.

The Sheriff said one reported incident occurred at a mobile home where the homeowner said two large glass jars containing loose coins were reported missing.

“Some cars were also broken into and ransacked,” Holley said. “We believe they were looking for money.”

The Sheriff indicated most of the vehicles involved were ones that had been left unlocked, making for a much easier prey for thieves.

Holley said a four-wheeler was also reported stolen, but that it was later recovered Monday morning when detectives canvassing the wooded area about 500 yards from the owner’s residence located it in the woods.

Meanwhile, Holley said the investigation into the break-ins is ongoing.
