MOREHEAD CITY – Margaret Simpson Freeman-Smith, 84, of Morehead City, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation.

The family will conduct a memorial service at 12 noon on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Morehead City.  A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Margaret Freeman-Smith born July 16, 1930 and grew up in Keen Mountain, VA. She was a graduate of RadfordCollege, receiving a teaching degree, teaching school in Whayville, VA and Ahoskie, NC. Following her teaching career, Margaret worked as the coordinator for Southern Delights Caterers in Ahoskie, NC.

Margaret was a member of Keen Mountain United Methodist Church, Ahoskie United Methodist Church, Wellsprings United Methodist Church in Williamsburg, VA and First United Methodist Church, Morehead City, NC. She was active in numerous church and community organizations in every community she lived in.  Her greener than green thumb, unlimited knowledge of plants, along with her love and passion for gardening made her a natural fit with every garden club wherever she lived.  Margaret was always the first to show up with gloves and spade in hand ready to get down and dirty.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, James and Gladys Simpson; her beloved husband, Julian Pittman Freeman and husband, Dr. Gladstone E. Smith, Jr as well as her sisters Betty Simpson Lawrence, and Mary Simpson Trosper; and her brother, J.K. Simpson.

Margaret leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter, Anna Marie Freeman-Ward and husband Lonnie, and Grand Daughter Katie Ward Miller and husband Jeremy; sisters, Shirley Simpson Rodriguez and husband Tony and Eva Simpson Bohon; along with nieces, nephews, extended family and step-son Stone Smith and wife Patty; and step-daughters Kathy Smith Golding, Pat Smith Pessia and Sally Smith Burke.

Margaret was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, educator and loyal friend. A true Southern lady who lived life with enthusiasm, joy and grace.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm prior to the service.
