Fatal wreck blamed on icy road

Monday night’s winter weather is responsible for claiming the life of a Hertford County woman, five days shy of her 20th birthday.

Mykayia Quintara Wilder, 19, of Ahoskie died at the scene of a two-vehicle accident on NC 561 in the vicinity of the Jim Hardy Road (between St. John and Tri-County Airport).

First Sgt. Mike Warren of the NC Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II office in Ahoskie said the accident resulted from Wilder’s vehicle losing control due to the icy conditions.

Warren said her vehicle, a 2005 Nissan passenger car, was traveling east on NC 561 at approximately 7:40 p.m. After losing control in a curve, Warren said Wilder’s vehicle crossed the center line with the driver’s side door facing the westbound lane. At that time, a 2014 Chevrolet truck, driven by 34-year-old Brian Keith Matthews of Henderson, was traveling west on NC 561. His truck impacted Wilder’s car in the driver’s side door.

Matthews was not injured and no charges were filed by NCHP Trooper J.K. Jones, who investigated the accident.

Warren said the truck was owned by Lee Electrical Company.

He added that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, and that speed was not a factor by either driver.

“It was a case of where the icy weather played a role in this tragic accident,” Warren said.

The fatality was the first of 2015 in the Troop A / District II area which covers Bertie, Hertford and Gates counties.
