EURE – The cause of an accident near here Monday night that claimed the life of a local woman is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Information released by NCHP Trooper G.P. Bowman revealed that 33-year-old April Vick Harrell of Ahoskie died in the two-vehicle accident that took place around 10 p.m. on US 13, south of Tar Heel BBQ near Hill Lane Road.

Bowman’s report shows that Harrell was operating a 2007 Ford truck northbound on US 13. Meanwhile, a 1999 International tractor-trailer, driven by 43-year-old Guillerno Ponce, was southbound on US 13. Bowman said the 18-wheeler, used to transport hogs, was empty at the time of the crash.

The two vehicles collided head on, according to Bowman.

Bowman said Harrell died at the scene of the accident. He added that Ponce suffered minor injuries.

The traffic fatality was the 14th of the year in the NCHP’s Troop A/District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Of those, four have occurred in Gates County.
