GARYSBURG – A 30-year-old man here was the victim of a July 4th murder.

Garysburg police are investigating the murder that occurred early Friday morning on Kee Street.

Town police Chief Melvin Garner said Deputy William James of the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, near Poplar Street and Turner’s Store, shortly after 1 a.m. There he found a man identified as Lynn Tyjuan Clanton lying on his back in the street. Clanton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garner said at least five shots were fired from a weapon of undisclosed caliber. Casings were collected at the scene, which is off Highway 301, Garner said.

At this time there are no suspect descriptions and no known motive.

“I believe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Garner said of Clanton.

Northampton County deputies and investigators were assisting the police department on Friday, working the crime scene and scouring the area for any additional evidence.

Garner said the assistance from numerous Northampton County investigators and deputies, as well as Sheriff Jack Smith, was appreciated.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-536-2167 or the sheriff’s office at 252-534-2611.
