BEAR GRASS – Patsy Cherry Owens passed away suddenly on June 26, 2014. She was born in Bear Grass August 10, 1938 to James Russell and Euzelia Harris Cherry.

Patsy graduated from Bear Grass High School in 1956 and then worked in Washington, DC for several years. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing her former classmates at several reunions. She graduated from East Carolina College and received her Master’s in Business Education in 1974 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught business education at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie for almost 30 years.  After retiring Patsy and her husband Calvin I. Owens moved to Bear Grass. They were married for a little over 37 years.

Patsy was one of eight children – four brothers and three sisters. Survivors are sisters Margaret Cherry, Elizabeth Smith, Janie Coltrain; and brothers Jerry Cherry and Richard Cherry as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and two brothers, William Cherry and James Dillon Cherry.

Patsy was a big sports fan, pulling for NC State basketball and football and Duke basketball, unless they were playing NC State. She and her brothers and sisters were a close knit family that spent much time together at the “big house” in Bear Grass and on trips together.

The funeral service was held Sunday, June 29 at Biggs Funeral Home Chapel in Williamston with the Rev. Candance Worth officiating. Burial followed at MartinMemorialGardens.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Bear Grass Educational Foundation, or Bear Grass Fire & Rescue, Bear Grass, NC27892.
