AHOSKIE – A malfunction in the electrical wiring has temporarily closed the Ahoskie office of the Hertford County Department of Social Services.

That office, located at 220 North Mitchell Street, may be closed for a portion of next week.

“There are electrical issues there which forced us to close the doors for the safety of the employees there as well as those who visit that office for services,” said Brenda Brown, interim director of Hertford County DSS.

Brown added that a work order has been placed to make the necessary repairs, which may include a re-wiring project. However, those repairs are not scheduled to begin until May 28.

The Ahoskie DSS office serves Hertford County citizens with the Work First program, Child Daycare program, Community Alternative Program, Medical Transportation, and Adult Services.

Those services/programs have been temporarily relocated to the main Hertford County DSS office in Winton (704 N. King Street). The 16 DSS employees working in the Ahoskie office have also been transferred to the Winton office.

All mail correspondence destined for the Ahoskie office should be sent to P.O. Box 218, Winton, NC 27986 and all telephone inquiries should be made to 252-358-7830.

“We apologize for any inconvenience the temporary closing has caused,” Brown concluded.
