RALEIGH – Esther Elizabeth Newsome Davis died at age 89 on March 4, 2014 at UniHealth Post-Acute Care in Raleigh, NC.
Esther was born on January 29, 1925 to the late Grover and late Nanny Jenkins.
Other than her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Lemuel Harvey Newsome, and her second husband, Wilbur Davis; her beloved son, Lemuel Howard Newsome; grandson, Patrick Ryan Keefe; her sister, Lottie Marie Odom; and brothers Cleveland Jenkins and Bruce Jenkins.
She is survived by her daughters, Jean Lamb of Raleigh, Judy Jones and partner, Terry Stockton, of Erwin, TN, and Marguerite “Miki” Keefe and husband, Peter, of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Lee Lamb, Dani Heijnes and husband Sonny, Joshua Newsome and wife Lindsey, and Kimberly Keefe and Trevor Keefe; and two great grandchildren, Lemuel Dakota Newsome and Raina Newsome.
Esther worked many years at Mylecraft Manufacturing Company as sole supporter of her family due to her first husbands’ disabilities. After her children were all grown she worked for Western and Southern Insurance Company and had varied part time jobs.
She was a member of Rich Square Baptist Church at her death and had previously belonged to Lasker Baptist Church where she led many of the mission programs and taught Sunday School. She had an abounding love for her Lord and Savior and tried to assure that her children knew Him also, as well as others she could share with. She truly believed the Hymn “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations.”
The funeral service will be held at Rich Square Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on March 9.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or Rich Square Baptist Annie Armstrong Offering.
