Bears triumph over Gryphons

ROCKY MOUNT – Ryan Weaver hit a three-pointer shot at the buzzer as Hertford County beat Rocky Mount 77-75 in overtime here Tuesday night and avenged a loss in Ahoskie from last week.

Rocky Mount led at halftime 32-28 and the Gryphons continued to lead 53-49 after three quarters. However, in the fourth quarter Hertford County would get it in gear and outscore the home team 15-11 to force overtime at 64-64.

In the extra period the game went back-and-forth before the Bears seized control and outscored Rocky Mount 13-11 with Weaver’s three-pointer making the difference. In the overtime Darius Wright also hit a pair of ‘threes’ and O’Shane Ximenes had a field goal and two free throws.

Jquwan Ruffin led the Bears with 26 points including hitting six three-pointers in the contest. All total, Hertford County hit 14 three-point field goals in the game. Rounding out the scoring for Hertford County was Weaver with 22 points, Ximenes had a dozen, 10 for Wright, six for Tyquan Davis and Jarrett Sexton scored one point.

Hertford County is 2-1 and will open the Northeastern Coastal Conference season Friday night when they host First Flight beginning at 4 p.m.  Saturday, the Bears will play Princess Anne of Virginia Beach at home in jayvee and varsity boys action beginning at 5:30 p.m.
