KILL DEVIL HILLS – First Flight High was able to bring across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then hold off visiting Hertford County for a 2-1 win that allowed the Nighthawks to maintain a tie for first place in the Northeastern Coastal Conference with a record of 7-1.

First Flight opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning to lead it 1-0 after one.

The Bears scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth when Clay Barmer doubled down the right field line and later scored when Ryan Weaver reached first base on a two-base error. That score knotted the game at 1-1 when the ‘Hawks failed to score in the bottom of the frame.

That score held until First Flight managed to push across the go-ahead, and what proved to be winning, run an inning and a half later.

Hertford County, which has now lost a season-high three games in a row, had just two hits for the contest; Barmer’s double and a base hit later by Ackerman Grace. Grace also took the loss on the mound despite a yeoman’s effort; allowing two runs on just two hits by the Nighthawks. Parker Kelly gets the win for First Flight on a one-run, two-hit game.

Hertford County falls to an even 4-4 in conference play and 11-5 overall. The Bears are back on the road Friday night in Elizabeth City against Northeastern.
