ROBERSONVILLE – The Bertie High School Falcon baseball team rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to down host South Creek in the first round of the Cougars’ Easter Tournament here Saturday afternoon.

Bertie opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Adam Cowand doubled and scored as Michael Scott reached second base on a throwing error. Christian Bland singled but Scott was held up at third. Bland then stole second to get into scoring position and he and Scott scored on Alex Harmon’s two-run single.  South Creek picked up a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 3-1 Bertie after one inning of play.

South Creek scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning and led 4-3 after two and the score remained at that through the next four innings.

In the top of the seventh came the game winners for Bertie. Javier Pagola walked and went to second on a Cowand sacrifice bunt. Scott walked and both he and Pagola stole second and third, respectively. Pagola and Scott both then scored when Christian Bland reached on an error with what became the game-winning runs.

Cody Matthews pitched seven innings for the win, allowing four runs, five hits, and he struck out three.

Bertie had seven hits. Jacob Damo was two for four to lead the Falcon attack. Matthew Weaver, Cowand, Scott, Bland, and Harmon had one hit apiece.

Bertie climbed over .500 to 6-5 with the win and played Hertford County this afternoon in the second round.
