CONWAY – The Conway Police Department is seeking the help of the community after a break-in at a popular local business.

Early Tuesday morning, Taylor Drug was broken into and 44 packs of cigarettes were stolen, according to Conway Police Chief Billy W. Duke.

Duke said he was informed about the crime at 5:45 a.m. by a Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald newspaper carrier.

“He noticed the front door of the business had been smashed in,” Duke said.

Upon arriving at Taylor Drug, located at 118 E. Main Street, Duke discovered that in addition to the front door, the back entrance was also forcibly opened and the door to an adjoining building had also been smashed opened.

Duke said all that was stolen from the store was 33 packs of Newports and 11 Natives brand cigarettes. Nothing was taken from the adjoining building.

He added an employee was at the business until 3 a.m. on Tuesday, narrowing a timeframe as to when the crime occurred.

Duke urged those who may have witnessed anything suspicious around this time to contact the Conway Police Department at 396-5553. All information will be held in confidence.

I think if I was a tax paying citizen of Conway I would be curious to say the least. As to why when someone was at the store until 3 am that with the buisness on the main street through the town with the front glass door broken in, that it took a newspaper carrier to discover it? Where is the police that are supose to be patroling the town? If you come through Conway during the business hours of the day you see police working to give moving violations and stand around the store. Does the town of Conway have protection at night or do the police go home and leave it to the county? If I was a town tax paying citizen and expected protection at night in the early morning hours(when majority of break-ins occur) I would call for a town meeting to address this issue!!

Way to go Cherokee!! I totally agree with you on that 100%!! I know over here where I’m from we have the sheriff department and the highway patrol patroll our area 24 hours. Someone just to break in for cigarettes, makes no sense at all. If you want cigarettes,do like honest people do. Pay for them!! I’m glad that no one was hurt.

Our town police officers do a great job!! There has never been a time when I have called I have not gotten a response quickly. The problem is some people are just sorry and there is no fix to that.
