MURFREESBORO –   The Chowan University women’s basketball team fell 52-37 to the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos on Thursday evening.

The Hawks out-rebounded the potent Fayetteville State offense 40-38, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Talaya Lynch paced the Hawks’ offense with 15 points.  Danielle Coleman collected eight rebounds in the loss.

Fayetteville State’s Kristen Hanzer led her squad with 18 points followed by Shuanda Ashford with 16 points.

Coming into Thursday’s game, the Lady Broncos averaged 77.5 points per contest.  The Hawks managed to hold them to 52 points, but they were unable to come up with the win.

Trailing 4-0 early in the first half, Chowan hustled to go on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 5-4.  The Hawks’ advantage at 17:49 was the only lead for Chowan in the game.   A 9-0 run from the Lady Broncos put Fayetteville up 13-5 with 12:56 remaining in the first half.

At the 11:41 mark, Lynch’s three-pointer put the Hawks within reach to make the score 13-8.  The Lady Broncos outscored Chowan 18-7 to close out the first with a 31-15 lead.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the game.  The Hawks outscored Fayetteville State 22-21 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

The Hawks fall to 0-10 overall and 0-2 in CIAA play after Thursday’s loss.  The Lady Broncos improve to 9-2 overall and pick up their first league win.

Chowan will hit the court again on Saturday when they take on the defending NCAA DII National Champions No. 15 Shaw University.  The CIAA match-up is set to tip-off at 2 p.m.
