Raiders down Northeast

LASKER — The Raiders of Pungo Academy picked up their second conference win of the season here Tuesday night defeating the Eagles of Northeast Academy by a 50-39 score.

Pungo jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three-point basket by Cole Austin Woolard and a deuce by Colby Latham. A Cody Hurdle basket for the Eagle squad was then followed by back to back threes by the Raider’s Ethan Credle giving the Raiders an 11-2 lead midway through the period.

They then outscored the Eagles by 5-4 the rest of the quarter and took a 16-6 lead into the second period.

The second quarter saw the Raiders continue to stretch their lead. Credle’s five points in the period helped Pungo squad open up a 27-10 lead at halftime.

The Raiders came out after intermission and hit the first three baskets of the quarter taking a 33-10 lead.

But baskets by Brandon Edwards, Hurdle and Trey Futrell cut the lead to 33-16 at the 5:05 mark. A basket by Woolard was followed by a basket by the Eagles’ Christian Fleetwood. Woolard scored again at the 4:08 mark giving the Raiders a 37-18 lead.

Fleetwood then hit three consecutive baskets cutting the Raider margin to 37-24.

A free throw by Futrell and a basket by the Raider’s Joshua Dunbar closed out the scoring leaving the Raiders ahead by a 39-25 margin at the period ended.

The fourth quarter saw the Eagles mount a mini comeback as they cut the Raider lead to 10 points with39 seconds remaining in the game. But an old fashioned three-point play by the Raiders Thomas Mann squashed any hopes of the Eagles completing the comeback as the Raiders held on for the 50-39 victory.

Pungo was led in scoring by Woolard’s 17 and Credle’s 15 points.  Also scoring were Colby Latham with six, Thomas Mann with five, Chris LoGelko with two, Joshua Dunbar with two, and Hunter Sutton with one point.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Christian Fleetwood with 17, Cody Hurdle with 10, Conner Hurdle with six, Trey Futrell with four and Brandon Edwards with two.

The Eagles will be looking for their first conference victory as they take on the Ridgecroft Rams at Ahoskie on Friday night.
