AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School earned a four-set volleyball victory over in-county rival Hertford County High School Aug. 31.

The Lady Rams won the first set 25-9, before falling 25-23 in set two. From there, however, Ridgecroft wrapped up the game with straight-set wins of 25-12.

In game one, Mary-joe Harrell served 10 in a row to give the Lady Rams a 13-4 lead that helped with the victory.

Erin Cooke had three kills in the victory while Katie Blowe added two. Haley Rivera had one kill and one tip.

The Lady Bears roared back in the second stanza and took a 25-23 win.

In the third set it was Blowe who helped the Lady Rams as she served six in a row to give Ridgecroft a 23-10 lead from which they never looked back. Cooke added four kills in the set while Blowe had three and Rivera added two tips.

In set four, it was Harrell again who dominated with her serve, this time rolling off 12 in a row to give Ridgecroft a 15-4 lead as they took the set 25-12. Blowe had two kills in the set while Harrell had one. Rivera had one kill and one tip.

“The girls’ hard work on serving shined today,” Ridgecroft coach Susan Oliver said. “Our serving was great. It allowed us to get the lead and remain in the lead through most of the game.”

The win boosted the Lady Rams to 2-1 for the season.

In junior varsity action, Ridgecroft edged HCHS in a three-setter. The Rams won the first set 25-8 thanks to Emily Grace, who served 10 in a row.

In the second set, the Lady Bears scored a 25-21 win. Ridgecroft then bounced back for a 15-12 victory in the tie-breaker.

“Our serving percentage hurt us today,” Oliver said. “It’s still early on in the season and the girls are working hard.”

The victory boosted Ridgecroft’s jayvee team to 1-2 in 2012.
